We'd have this by now if Jindal wasn't trying to stick it to Obama and refuse federal infrastructure funds a few years back.
Another shining example of Jindal looking out for Louisianians.

While this is largely true, Jindal may have done Louisiana a back-handed favor. The new. scaled down proposal is cheaper, more flexible, and may lead to increased economic development at each stop along the way.

New Orleans wants this and they want BR to help pay for it.
I am vociferously against this. And yes, I agree with the poster who said any money should be put in a loop first.
The only people who benefit from light rail are the builders of light rail. Right now, they are PLOWING money into lawmakers reelection campaigns (if not their pockets).

So they're utilizing the Kansas City Southern Railway

The rail authority must negotiate a deal with Kansas City Southern and Canadian National rail companies to upgrade and use their private tracks.

If we run this foreign style intermediate stops are 1-2 minutes each. Doubt that flies in the U.S. Though.

It mighy be doable depending on how they ticket the rides or train configuration.

They need to have cars like these...

I don't know of many people that commute from New Orleans to BR for work and vice versa. Besides, who the hell wants to sit on a train, stopping a bunch of times between the two cities?
I'd rather something from Mandeville to downtown

Train from Chicago ohare airport to downtown grand station was a 40 or 45 minute ride will about 15 or stops. I think the number of stops is a big factor.

I don't get why everyone gets a hard-on for having a stupid train running between BR and NOLA. Literally they could build a third lane on the interstate and completely solve any problems about commuting.
Especially if it makes several stops in between. So you have to drive to downtown NOLA or BR, get on a train that stops all along the way, get off the train at the other end, find a vehicle or public transit, and take that to your destination.
Or you can just get on I-10 and be done with it in less time.

Personally, I would love this (especially if there was a stop at Louis Armstrong).
However, there are a lot of other transportation issues to be addressed before this.

There's a big difference in this an a mass transit subway system.

Don't forget the sensitive wetlands along the route. That's not just an aesthetic concern. You have to worry about coastal erosion and hurricane protection. And speaking of hurricanes, we have to elevate the tracks so we don't get a repeat of the twin spans. That will add a fortune to the cost.
It's a bad idea all around. This type of mass transit works for the Amtrak corridor (which is why it's already there) or for wide open areas out West. The I-10 corridor, not so much.

The tracks are in a protected area. You won't see a monstrous storm surge through there. It would be a different story if this wanted to utilize tracks between New Orleans and Slidell.

Couldn't agree less. This will happen for the best reasons...it's needed. It's wanted. It's overdue.
It WILL happen.

HNTB: Baton Rouge-New Orleans passenger train would serve 1.4 million
A study by HNTB Corp. for regional transit organizations and mayors in Louisiana says that a new passenger train service linking New Orleans and Baton Rouge on existing freight trackage, with intermediate stops and beginning as twice-daily trips, could ultimately grow to regular service with a station near New Orleans International Airport.
Passenger train service would allow riders to work during commutes, offer an evacuation route during hurricanes, especially to Baton Rouge hospitals, and supply easy connections to events, such as LSU and New Orleans Saints football games, Mardi Gras, and Jazz Fest.”

While we're at it, the country should at least prepare to start laying down the infrastructure for self-driving cars and for high tech traffic control. Stoplights are, what 70 year old technology? We have the tech to do so much better.

Seems awesome to me!!!! Hope this works out

Meh. That's a touristy thing, too - but I do see full cars on the Carrollton line - I'm not going to deny that.
