Dedicated passenger train from Baton Rouge to New Orleans "3-5 years away"

Commuter rail linking New Orleans to Baton Rouge has broad support, big obstacles
"Sitting here today, I'd be willing to place a serious bet that within three to five years, we will be able to board a train between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and work, read, sleep in convenience and safety as we traverse the southeast super region," said Michael Hecht, president and CEO of the regional economic development group Greater New Orleans Inc.?
A Baton Rouge-New Orleans passenger line, especially one that swings by Louis Armstrong International Airport, has become a linchpin for elected officials and business leaders looking to tighten the economic connections among seven parishes along that route: the "super region" that Hecht identified.
The plan would require roughly $260 million in infrastructure improvements, including a $62.1 million rebuilding of the 1.8-mile trestle across the Bonnet Carré Spillway.

Wont be utilized. White people in the south are disgusted by mass transit.

Nice! Similar to Megabus, that sounds like something crime-free & filled with luxury.

And be bankrupt in 5 to 7 years, possibly even with massive government subsidies.
"Passenger trains" in the south. The very idea.
ETA: at the "only" a quarter of a billion.
So, there's the reason it's happening - political slush fund for the construction. Rinse, repeat.

lol...
3 years - no way.
5 years - maybe.
8 years - likely.
And that's if the money was in the bank today.

It would be utilized more than most can probably imagine right now. As long as it felt safe, it would be huge for weekend stays, getting to airport, and LSU football game traffic.

TRUTH!!!!
Not enough public transit infrastructure in Baton Rouge for this either.
They need to be spending money on a loop for BR instead of this stupid bullshite.

In 3-5 years, no way. Rail projects are notorious for being behind schedule and over budget.

So they're utilizing the Kansas City Southern Railway. Good choice.

This would fall far short of justifying its existence.

Who would want to leave New Orleans to go to Baton Rouge for anything less than an LSU football game?

I'm cool with this as long as it doesn't make a stop in St. Tammany.

Seven parishes along the existing tracks that trace the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans support the plan: East Baton Rouge, Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, Jefferson and Orleans.
They account for more than 2 million people, 46 percent of Louisiana's jobs and the source of more than half the state's sales tax revenue, according to GNO Inc. and other stakeholders. Baton Rouge is the seat of state government and home to LSU. New Orleans has the port and a burgeoning entrepreneurial class. The River Parishes have the petrochemical industry. And each of these hubs is in search of skilled workers.
He said he expects 75,000 new jobs to come into that corridor by 2022, and as many as 50,000 people could be shuttling back and forth between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
That need is why the latest passenger rail plan stands a better chance than its predecessors of becoming reality, said Cedric Grant, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's infrastructure czar.
"I'm telling you that these job opportunities are the things making a difference, No. 1," Grant said, "and No. 2, the people who are coming in and investing in the state now. The market itself is speaking to people, that this is a good viable opportunity."

How much would it cost to ride said train one way.

It worked in North Haverbrook. I say we listen to Lyle Langley.

Public transportation in Baton Rouge has seen a significant increase in utilization over the last couple of years after the CATS tax was enacted. If trends continue, traffic is expected to decrease by upwards of 65%. Bottom line: This railroad will produce extreme profit levels within 10 years of completion.
