I know several people that have Hispanic last names but are white as Norwegians. Blond hair, blue eyes and Midwestern accents. And they can speak fluent Spanish.

Would it be okay for them to declare themselves in the minority demo on applications for college, graduate schools, jobs, etc.? We know minorities get preferential treatment. I mean, if they have Hispanic last names and speak fluent Spanish they should be able to classify as a minority, right?

The fact that you even have to ask this question PROVES there is no fricking such thing as WHITE PRIVILEGE.

I'm something like 1/16 native american. Pretty sure I could open a land casino and get all sorts of "advantages" like on apps. Never done it.

Well, this is an effort to shed the "white privilege". It's a damn boat anchor.

Hispanic/Latino isn't a race. Your skin color has very little to do with it.

From this point forward, every job interview and application I fill out will be done as a non-binary, mixed race, autist.

Try to tell me I'm not any of those things.

Of course

For instance, I am a white upperclass straight male with one kid and a wife.

But I identify as an active duty army soldier and black lesbian single mother of 6 with an income below 20,000 when I file my taxes.

Hispanic is not a race but an ethnicity.

PSAT National Hispanic Recognition Program Qualifications LINK

NHRP's Definition of Hispanic/Latino
To be eligible, you must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino. Hispanic/Latino is an ethnic category, not a racial category, so you can be of any race.

You must have ancestors from at least one of these countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, or Venezuela.

Is their ancestry traced back to a Hispanic ethnic group? If so, they have no problem

Hispanic just means of Spanish origin. So if they have a Hispanic last name then technically they're Hispanic, unless they were adopted.

my old boss swore up and down his last semester of college he wrote down a different race when he was filling out the federal aid paper work and received a check for the max allowable by law.

I knew a girl born and raised in Buenos Aires. Her parents were born and raised in Vietnam. She's Vietnamese, but she's also Hispanic imo. :mindblown:

You're thinking about this too much. Just say you feel like you're Mexican, and boom, you're Mexican

There are several last names are Italian that sound Hipanic. I wonder if those can pass as "Hispanic".

Italians and Spanish are basically the same thing. Just look at Mario.

My Ancestry.com DNA results came back as 38% Iberian Peninsula (which is essentially Spain). Does that qualify?

I think we have already determined that whites are the most discriminated group in America in 2017.

May work good unless it's for a credit card or loan application.
