Never negotiate based on monthly payments

the whole car buying process is a load of shite that I wish i could punch them all in the face.
you authorize them to run credit and the fricker comes back to your desk and gives you a range of ($385-$465) a month w/ no terms/apr's or fricking anything. Do i look like a piece of fricking shite you a-hole?

Yeah, you really have to run the numbers to see which way is more beneficial.

I would rather bring my own financing than do it through the dealer. It's really that nausea inducing to deal with these folks who are slimier than lawyers and politicians. It's a necessary evil, like going to the dentist, to buy a car from a dealer.

That tax thing is way overrated.

You don't understand that asking about loan payoff on a trade as the very first part of the deal is strange?

Depends on what you are trading in. IN La. the sales tax is almost 10%. If you are trading in something nice it can make a decent difference. I usually try to sell on my own and do an in/out at a dealer so I can get that sales tax credit if possible.

i resemble that remark, but at least we aren't no. 1 on the slime list!
(off-topic, we business lawyers really suffer from the billboard lawyers of the world--not that there's anything wrong with that.)

In and out is the way to go, but some dealers are pissy about it.
F& I men are a PITA.

For the record, I'm a lawyer, too. But I'm a self-aware one.

It's the 95% that give the rest of us a bad name.

There's a guy who posts on here that has posted tips on how to negotiate when buying a new vehicle.
Can't remember his name, but maybe somebody can point you to his posts about this subject?

Nah, lawyers have vastly improved their rep over the past few years.
Posted on 5/18/16 at 10:49 am to colorchangintiger
Negative they may give you a number to show you on the buyers order but the actual cash value ACV of your trade may be less than you owe. They call this over allowing. They just add the difference to the front end or selling price. Its all a game to show more for your trade which will also increase you tax credit.

Sounds like someone went to an All Star dealership. Come see me if you want a 'real' deal/offer

I've bought and traded lots of cars over the years, and it's never been the first thing discussed. It gives the dealer leverage early unnecessarily, and I make a habit of not giving leverage when I don't have to. Talking about loan payoff and wanting to call the bank as the first step of a negation is extremely odd.

This is actually who I deal with on my Fords. I made friends with my F&I guy lol. Everything is done through text before I get there. I have a couple other friends in the biz that I call and get a realistic value on my trade before we determine that price though.

There are 3 ways they try to get money out of you. Selling price, trade in and interest financing. They will get you on all 3 of you don't know what you're doing. 9 times out of 10 you are better off with outside financing because the dealer will "buy" an interest rate of 7.25 but "sell" the customer a rate of 9.25. The back end take a the profit. Never negotiate payment. Only gross profit. Selling price minus trade in.
