I use email for the most part. I like the guys I buy from and I'll repeat with them.

Everybody's gotta make a profit.

Just go to Carmax.

Absolutely. When I got my latest truck, I sold my previous one to CarMax. They crushed what the local dealership was going to offer.

Maybe maybe not. If so, then of course sell on your own, but not a lot of people like buy used cars that don't have clear title. Essentially the seller has to use the buyer's funds to pay off the loan.

It gives the dealer leverage early unnecessarily, and I make a habit of not giving leverage when I don't have to.
How?

Talking about loan payoff as the first step of a negation is extremely odd.
Look, I still don't see how anyone would think that is odd. I would truly like to understand though.

I don't think you want to understand. You've been told the answer twice, but you just keep saying "How?"

How many times has a dealer wanted to call you bank as the first step of the process? Be honest. I'll set the over/under at 0.5 and take the under.

My god, reading this thread makes me so glad I work at a non-negotiating dealership.

"Wanna buy the car?"

"Yep"

"Sweet lets go do paperwork"

frick everything in this thread.

I'm sure you do love that being on the selling end.

I most certainly do. Liens are one of the scariest things in my practice.

Where? I have seen no answer. Now you're just being a dick for no reason.

I've never traded a car that I owed anything on. That might give you a hint as to why none of this makes sense to me.

It gives them leverage. The type of leverage has been explained in this thread by several people.

Then perhaps you can just take our word for it since you admittedly have zero experience.

how does owing/not owing have anything to do what the trade in value is?

I do, and my customers do as well. I talk to maybe one person per month who openly objects to the way we do business, and I cheerfully show them the door every time. It's fun.

In 10 months of selling cars I can count on one hand the number of customers I've lost to a better price on the same vehicle at a different dealership anywhere in Montana. It just doesn't happen. We do our homework and make sure our prices are as good as they can possibly be. It is true that some people just want to haggle, but it doesn't happen anywhere near as often as you probably think.

Before anyone uses the "there's a sucker born every minute" line...we sell nearly 400 cars a month in a town of 35,000 people, and we've been doing that for 17 years. Clearly we're doing something right, but it isn't for everybody.

There are plenty of uninformed people that like not having to negotiate and are willing to sacrifice getting a good deal.

ETA: If you're selling new, I could be more inclined to believe you can offer decent deal. I assumed you were talking pre-owned. Apologies if that's not the case.

Terrible advice.

When we traded in our RX for a GX, we shopped the dealership by getting quotes from Carmax and Texas Direct Auto. Carmax was the lowest of all three, by a mile. By ~ $6,000! Our actual words were "are you serious?" when they made their offer. We literally laughed in their faces.

Texas Direct was highest.

We got Sewell in Dallas to match TX Direct and even so, a couple of weeks later TX Direct called to see if we still wanted to sell and offered even more.

Carmax is Lowball, Inc. You can do better trading to your dealer, which is an amazingly bad sign. You can certainly do better selling privately to a 3rd party. If you want top-dollar, find a way to go to Texas Direct.

We bought my wife's current car from a no-haggle dealership. It was a great price and better than anywhere than anyone around was willing to match.

Bozeman Ford and JC Billion are still in business in this town because there are plenty of uninformed people who let themselves get fricked around and screwed out of thousands of dollars.

We outsell them 2.5:1 every month because we show people what else is out there and say "yeah, maybe you could go get a better price on this similar vehicle at a negotiating store, but do you really want to frick with them?"

49 times out of 50 the answer is no, because we treat people right and they don't want to go anywhere else.

Like I said, a lot of people are lazy.

And like I edited in, I also said if you're talking new units, that's different. The internet has killed dealers' leverage on new unit price point IMO. A quick search on autotrader or similar sites easily gives you the best prices to expect on a particular model. For me, the best prices are usually 500 or so miles away, but I'll happily make that drive if the local places don't want to match it when it means saving several thousand dollars.

obviously if the vehicle is worth 8k and you owe 11k the dealer is going give you less than trade in value to pay off the lien. the customer should realize that. I guess my point is what difference does it make if that is found out before the deal or after...one way or the other the customer will have to pay the delta
