Why would someone trade a car in that they're upside down on?

I'm sure that is part of it, but frankly I hope people keep being lazy because it pays my bills.

ETA: i think part of our success is tied into the fact that we are in a pretty small market with well-defined competition. It's not like we're in Seattle or something where there are a hundred other dealerships; there probably aren't a hundred dealerships in Montana, period.

fwiw, I exclusively sell used cars using the same no-haggle philosophy, and in a way it's easier than selling new, especially if people have been shopping elsewhere. We put good money into the used cars to fix them up right, and if they've been test driving what our competition sells then a lot of times our vehicles sell themselves because they drive in a straight line and don't make weird noises.

Which is why I said you loved it from the selling end.

Sounds like your dealership is the kind I'd drive to when the local places don't do what they should. Your type of dealership is rare.

Yeah, I've gathered that. I have a friend who works at JC Billion and I've sold cars to salesmen at other dealerships in Missoula, Billings etc. Getting glimpses into how things happen where they work makes me realize that we are pretty unique.

1. People's needs change. Just bought a Camaro and found out your wife's having twins? A Tahoe starts looking like a really good idea.

2. The average person keeps a car for a little over 3 years, and most people overpay in the first place.

3. If you're upside down but have cash on hand to cover the difference or at least get close to it then it doesn't really matter.

it won't. but........when you ask what your fricking note will be when financing the vehicle, they need your payoff or the estimate will be way off.

You are actually correct from a national standpoint but I was speaking to the average person in Montana I should have been more specific

oh.........and by the way.......there's only one number that counts when it's all said and done. it's what the hell am I financing.

you'd be amazed at how many dumbasses will take this and run:

2016 sierra gmc - 5000.00 rebate......5000.00 dealer discount. sale price 50,000.00 (note- rebates and discounts are not on the website of the dealer) ok......here you go

they are interested in the sierra and want 15k for their trade.

well....dealer will take 5000.00 off of msrp and give the customer 20,000.00 for trade. customer starts growing a hard on in less than 3 seconds. can't believe that they are getting that much for their trade. can't believe that the dealership is not only giving them payoff.......but also giving them an extra 5k to boot.

it's WHAT AM I BORROWING (when not paying cash, obviously)

Of course you did!!!

You do realize that if it's not a profitable transaction, we often times don't complete the transaction, right? We do respectfully decline to do business with folks sometimes.
