onestly, I prefer the over-lighted boats to the ones with no lights. I sit outside late at night and early in the morning at the camp and I bet every 3rd boat doesn't have a single light on. Sure mixed up nav lights are a hazard but I would rather know a boat is there and have a chance to figure out how it is moving than no lights and the boat just pops up out of the ink on my bow.
Same, I'd rather a boat be over lighted than unlighted. The 'blinding" aspect is really an issue unless they are very close to you.

Driver of the pontoon boat was sober and going to help friends
Not doubting this but with 7 people aboard at midnight, what was he helping friends do?

They had been drinking. He was trying to help them get back to the camp safely.

That makes sense, hate to see when people try and do the right thing (call A sober driver to get drunk party home) and end up in a tragedy

Popular manchac highway canal bar “Sun Buns” threw a after dark party last night. Only way to get there is by boat. Such a dangerous thing to do just for money.
A boat left there and headed back to tickfaw river. That boat t-boned a party barge with 6 people on it. It’s being said the party barge didn’t have any lights.
One person died from each vessel. One male, one female. 6 kids now without a parent. Very sad situation.

As a licensed charter boat captain I can say that many don’t need alcohol to be a menace on the water day or night. I am way to the right but there needs to be a licensing requirement to operate a boat.
Passing the Rules of the Road test should be a min requirement for license.
The number of first time boat owners who bought during the pandemic is astonishing. It's why I won't fish out Shell Beach, Hopedale or GI on the weekends.
Venice or Empire for a novice is deadly. The Manchac launch on weekends a zoo, the Tickfaw at night cloudy or with no moon, invisible.
Agree 100% with this requirement.
Have a bit more than a "fender bender" on the water and you ain't unbuckling your seat belt and getting out to walk to the side of the road.

Both are illegal Mr Esquire
Duh. So is operating under the influence, open exhausts, not having enough PFDs etc but it doesn't mean my desire to not be on the water with boats breaking certain laws isn't higher than being on the water with boats breaking other laws.

Chase Sharkey is one of the deceased per his family on Facebook. Looks like he had 4 young kids. Terrible

Since when?
Became law in Louisiana since 2003.

Do you need a Boating License in Louisiana? Louisiana law requires boat safety education for all boat operators born after January 1, 1984, who will be operating a motorized vessel over 10 hp. The minimum age requirement for the online course is 10 years old. Not carrying your Louisiana Boater Card when it is required can result in a fine.

Younger folks have to take a boaters safety course, but there isn’t a license.

Calm down girl, Everyone needs to pass a min standards boating test not just those born after 84. WL&F needs to have enforcement out early and late patrolling. Increase the fines to pay for it if needed and quit buying shite for the head administrator as a payoff.

Took a safety course, never heard of that other bullshite and don't believe it.

I think he means everyone should have to take a course. Which I agree, a lot of dumbasses don’t know the simple rules of the road. It’s not complicated, but people do some really dumb stuff on the water.

It sounds like the pontoon didn’t have any nav or anchor lights on. If this is the case, as much as I’d like to blame the sea fox, it isn’t his fault. In a navigational channel after dark without nav (red/green) and anchor lights is illegal and really dumb. Many boats navigate in the dark, and legally speaking this sounds like the fault of the pontoon. However, it is really really really stupid to have a boat underway fast enough to be on plane if you can’t navigate with radar or low-light camera. Even if all objects in the water “should” be lighted. Both boats made very bad decisions and did not prioritize the safety of their passengers. I feel so bad for the families of the ones who did not survive. They didn’t own the boats and put their trust in the guys driving.
