Mourners at an Ecuadorian wake were left stunned after their “dead” relative began banging on the inside of her coffin.

Bella Montoya, 76, regained consciousness during the vigil, which was held in the city of Babahoyo on Friday.

Incredible video shows medics tending to Montoya after her loved ones realized she was still alive. She can be seen clearly breathing as she is removed from the casket and placed onto a stretcher.

“Her left hand was hitting the side of the coffin, and it was shaking,” Montoya’s son, Gilbert Balberán, told local media, according to Jam Press.

Balberán claims the wake was held just four hours after Montoya was declared dead, with a medical examiner even providing him with a death certificate.

quote:

Her cause of death was listed as cardiorespiratory arrest.

According to Balberán, the cardiorespiratory arrest caused her to suffer catalepsy — a trancelike condition marked by the rigidity of the body, decreased sensitivity to pain, and slower bodily functions such as breathing.

As a result, hospital staff allegedly believed that she had passed away.

What's important to take away from this is that you should never go to a hospital in Ecuador.

This is my only fear involving death. I couldn't imagine waking up in a coffin, especially while buried.

Stories such as these make me wonder how common it is to be buried alive.

Scary stuff.

In the U.S.? 0% for a normal person. They embalm you first. Don't think your heart will still tick when it's pumping that fluid in lieu of blood.

Now if you live out in the country somewhere, and your family just sticks you in a box and buries you without telling anyone?

This is literally the reason that “wakes” were started before funerals.

Who the heck holds a funeral 4 hours after someone dies. Goodness, was the family planning this.

There have been stories of quite a few coffins opened up that are old (like 19th century and earlier) with scratch marks on the ceiling showing people were clawing trying to get out.

how long do you think the air would last in a coffin if someone was buried alive? what a shitty way to go.
