Tech is public but admission standards are more in line with private schools, if that makes sense.

Yeah I know it’s hard to get into I was just curious about the tuition and it being public. A few buddies of mine went there but it’s been 20 years.

My choice was pretty simple. I could go to Alabama, live with my sister, and parents pay tuition. Or accept the scholarship I got at Troy. Even when I started I thought about going for two years to knock out my general studies and then transfer to Alabama. But I loved it once I got there, being closer to home and the beach, and had really good classmates and professors going into business school.

Tech seems pretty sterile as far as the college experience itself goes. Football games there are very boring and the students seem to have targets on their backs for area criminals.

Broadly speaking, I agree. But it all depends on her intended career path, degree, and cost of attending.

Why spend $100k + to go to GT to study chemical engineering to go work in downstream ops for a gulf coast plant?

I did, and while you were uninformed, I only replied to you because you were the last post. I merely said what the school rankings were, based on peer review, as reported in U.S. News.

Now, lets look at your post that I replied to.

OP has already stated that she is looking at Environmental Engineering. She is also about to start her senior year in high school, leaving her ample opportunity to change her major. Not every Environmental Engineer goes to work in the oil patch.

OP, nor anyone else in the thread mentioned Chemical Engineering. $100k in debt is an assumption on your part. We have no way of knowing what scholarships she will get, what her grades and test scores are, what GA Tech will offer her, or what her scholarships will be. It is within the realm of possibility that she would make money to go there. Does GA have their own version of TOPS?

There is simply not enough information yet to assume anything about her incurrence of debt, or career path. We do know she is a STEM kid, and for that, I am proud of her and the OP.

this is true, but very few 18 year olds now exactly what they want to do... and even less go through with it

ETA- which is why it’s probably better to stick with the better school

Yeah really. Ga Tech is an academic school.

You're doing your daughter a disservice by trying to convince her to go to LSU over Georgia Tech.

I agree. I am in the middle of this in the Hangit household now. The major can change, but the first few years are math, science, and chemistry oriented. This means that if the major changes, the groundwork has been done already and it is no big deal.

I totally agree, if circumstances allow. OP is doing the right thing, in guiding his daughter through a STEM curriculum and letting her decide later.

right. as long as they know they want to go into the sciences, engineering, or business, they’re good
Worst case scenario is a victory lap (highly recommended)

You really don’t want a list of GT alum posted.......it wouldn’t help your argument.

If you reluctantly lose her to school like that I think it will be ok.
