Remember her famous quote: "we don't need to defund the police, we need to dismantle it"? How'd that go for law abiding citizens in the Twin Cities? And she didn't get close to what she really wanted.

Genuinely curious why 3 people downvoted this. What about it is untrue?

I've been in Minneapolis all week. I've had to come here a lot over the years, and have seen it evolve in the past decade.

Some positives:
- Decent economy with a lot of large companies, and a healthy mix of blue and white collar jobs.
- Reasonable COL, especially compared to other large midwestern cities like Detroit or Chicago. It's more in line with Kansas City, which is smaller and has a smaller airport.
- Summers can get hot and muggy, but are much easier to handle than summers on the gulf coast.
- Suburbs are very nice, and many have excellent public schools.
- If you have a boat, you'll have a lot of great fishing options during the summer. They love to fish here. They just don't know how to cook.
- Traffic just isn't that much of an issue, especially if you commute downtown. If you are accustomed to places like Baton Rouge or even Houston.....MSP's major highways will feel empty and desolate by comparison.
- The airport is a huge hub for Delta Airlines, and you can get a flight to pretty much anywhere in the midwest and to both Europe and Asia pretty easily.

Negatives;
- I've seen downtown decline sharply since 2016. That decline accelerated rapidly after the pandemic and it's still happening. Most of those office towers are 60% occupied at best (including my company's tower), and there are more "for lease" signs in the retail spaces than actual retail. Most restaurants are open from 11AM to 2PM and are closed during dinner.
- The people are weird. They come off as nice, but they are not particularly trustworthy and very passive aggressive. This is where the "Minnesota Nice" thing comes in. It's real.
- The food is "Minnesota Good", which is to say it's horrible if you are from areas with good food like the gulf coast, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, etc.
- I've been here in the winter and it sucks. In fact, I've been here several times in April-May some years when it snowed. There is something fundamentally wrong with a place where it snows in April and May.
- Mosquitoes are almost as bad in Minnesota as they are in Louisiana. All that frozen weather in the winter doesn't stop them from using the many lakes and ponds in the region to breed.
- Keep your head on a swivel. There is some pretty serious crime problems downtown, and police presence isn't very good.

Seemed like a nice place when I went around 10 years ago, but I suspect a lot has changed since then.

Edina is a very nice place. Downtown, like any liberal city, is a hell hole. Great economy, great Summer but terrible winters as many have stated. She will enjoy living and working in Edina. It is pricey but a very nice place.

Over 20% of the city council are muslim. Acting like it has no effect on the city is disingenuous.

Well they are partially right especially after the pandemic.

I have to travel a lot for work all over the lower 48 + Canada. I've got pretty good perspective on the trends that many cities in North America because I travel almost every week - including to Minneapolis.

There has been an obvious decline in safety and quality in most American urban centers that I've worked in since 2020/2021. It's pretty obvious in New York, but you can see it in even smaller towns like Memphis, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and others. San Francisco's decline has been shocking as has Los Angeles because of the major homeless problem. It's also happening in Houston and Dallas too, and there are varying degrees of decline and upheaval in the real estate market. But none of them has felt quite as severe as Minneapolis's downtown.

Minneapolis had a very impressive urban core 10 years ago. It was downright crowded, and restaurants/shopping were around everywhere. That's just not the case today. It feels downright deserted during most week nights if there isn't something going on at the Target center.

Remember - Minneapolis not only had a pandemic, but most of their core employers still allow remote work. And it also had those riots and protests during 2020 that really screwed things up. That doesn't mean the suburban or outlying areas are bad - it's just something that you'll want to take note of if you ever decide to buy real estate. I'd avoid downtown if you are buying real estate. I'd avoid downtowns if you are buying real estate in almost every mid sized or large city in this country TBH.

Just pointing out that Minneapolis's decline downtown has been particularly severe. But that's not really an issue if you live in an outlying area because most of the rest of the metro seems to be doing quite well.

Now this is a story all about how
Minneapolis got flipped, turned upside down
With Muslim communities in the neighborhood, they thrive
In Minneapolis, where their culture comes alive

In Minnesota born and raised, in the mosque is where they prayed
Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool
And all shootin' some hoops outside of the school
When a couple of Muslims, they were up to no good
Started making trouble in the neighborhood
They got one little city council and the media got scared
They said, "We're movin' to Minneapolis 'cause the vibes are so rare!"

I begged and pleaded with 'em day after day
But they packed their bags and they moved anyway
They gave Muslims a place and they said, "We're there"
To sit on our thrones as the new heirs of Bel Air

Ask them why they're here (or there, as it were) and they will say better opportunities and a better quality of life, and then they'll vote for and support the things that have their home countries existing as 3rd world countries with untold oppression and atrocities. But yes, let's keep importing diversity.

Georgia elected Taylor-Greene and Colorado elected Boebert, both women are extreme clowns, but it's funny no one here degrades those places.

Wait, so you're equating Omar, who advocates for all things Muslim and advances rhetoric and policies that villainize our country and history and way of life, who also considers herself a Muslim and Somali before an American...to those two who are largely America first? I'm not saying they're not morons, much of what they say is ridiculous. But to suggest that Taylor Greene and Boebert are as much a threat to our standing as people like Omar is absurd.

shite, just take Omar's "dismantle the police" position. Every single place that was pushed felt and will continue to feel the negative effects of it. Crime went crazy, quality of life diminished...many of those places reversed course when they saw the outcomes (which anyone with a firing neuron knew would come) but she still holds those beliefs and no one will chastise her for it. She and her ilk are dangerous to the US.

The Muslim influence in the US is at its early stages but gaining steam big time. It's at the "we just want to marry, we're not coming for your children" stage of the slippery slope.

I've know several people from the area and they all seemed to like it. They do enjoy activities regularly that would kill most of us from the south....they LOVE winter. Wives of abusive husbands often suffer from similar emotional issues.....something kicks your arse over and over and there ain't a thing you can do about it so you may as well grow to accept it....

Honestly the rapid decline I’ve noticed in the last decade (which accelerated the last few years), the weird people, and the winters would be a serious issue for me.

I’ve noted my concerns in my posts above. Leaving MSP today and hope not to have to return for work for at least a few months.

The job offer would have to be a lot better than a similar one from Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, etc. I personally much prefer those towns. Chicago and Detroit have winters too but the people and the food are much better. I think those towns are more open and friendly to outsiders from the southern US too.
