All religions have their quirks.

A better example would probably be Mormonism.

They are a low hanging fruit.
But they have the best concept of heaven. You die and get your own planet? It's almost worth the odd underwear and lack of caffeine.

Surprised to learn that there is a pretty big branch of that cult in Baton Rouge.

Which OT posters have the inside scoop on this?

They have very few members anywhere but fleece them for lots of money. In turn, they buy up property to hide the money and to make it appear as they are flush with members. All of those properties are minimally staffed and void of members. Just big, fixed up Potemkin villages.

Depends.

quote:

The Catholic Church states that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ under the species of bread and wine. It maintains that by the consecration, the substances of the bread and wine actually become the substances of the body and blood of Jesus Christ (transubstantiation) while the appearances or "species" of the bread and wine remain unaltered (e.g. colour, taste, feel, and smell)

you do realize that Catholics don't believe that's symbolism. The majority of other sects of Christianity believe it to be symbolism, but Catholics try to tell you that priests are magicians.

Transubstantiation.

If you’re going to mock something, at least do it correctly. Because the symbolic act of Communion

It's not symbolic by the Catholic Church teachings:

quote:

Transubstantiation is, according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, "the change of the whole substance of bread into the substance of the Body of Christ and of the whole substance of wine into the substance of the Blood of Christ". This change is brought about in the eucharistic prayer through the efficacy of the word of Christ and by the action of the Holy Spirit. However, the outward characteristics of bread and wine, that is the 'eucharistic species', remain unaltered. In this teaching, the notions of "substance" and "transubstantiation" are not linked with any particular theory of metaphysics.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that, in the Eucharistic offering, bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ. The affirmation of this doctrine was expressed, using the word "transubstantiate", by the Fourth Council of the Lateran in 1215. It was later challenged by various 14th-century reformers, John Wycliffe in particular.

The manner in which the change occurs, the Roman Catholic Church teaches, is a mystery: "The signs of bread and wine become, in a way surpassing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ."

That was one of those 80s-90s joints that made me feel like I was super grown up as a child. Like it was a privilege to get to go there. Miss places like that.

i find it hilarious how many downvote you, and i'd bet many are Catholics that are too stupid to understand what they are told they are supposed to believe. They pick and choose what they want to believe, and just go to church every sunday b/c that's just what they are supposed to do b/c they worry about how others will think about them if they don't go to church.
Transubstantiation is one of the biggest differences between Catholicism and other Christian sects, yet i seriously doubt the majority of people in church every Sunday actually believe they just ate Jesus' body and blood.

Yeah, common sense says symbolism, but the Catholic church doesn't always use common sense...

quote:

and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation.

Scientology is an example of the fact you can make people believe anything.

How are so many people so gullible?

And then let's talk about what they all believe:

A man was nailed to a cross and then zombied back to life and flew into the skies.

A man took a paltry supply of picnic food and Harry Pottered it into a feast for the masses.

A man walked on water.

A man is simultaneously a himself, a ghost and our heavenly father (talk about identity dysphoria!)

And this same man presently cares about the football players YOU SUPPORT winning the current game they are playing!

see, magic is real.
and that fish i caught was this big.
and back in my day we used to walk 5 miles to school in the rain.

how an educated adult can still believe that crap amazes me. We had many arguments in religion class at my catholic high school about the magical world of Catholicism. They've always got that one word answer to tell you to quit being logical...... FAITH.
Just have faith man, stop using your brain and just believe what those terrorists from the middle east that have been fighting over this stupid shite for 5000 years said in that book that was "written" by politicians picking and choosing what they wanted to include and not include, and how they wanted to interpret it.

There use to be a church in Lafayette on the Scott end of West Congress. I don't think they are there anymore. Maybe they moved, or just no more people practice it.
