I was hunting a few weeks ago and decided to go to a box stand that we haven't hunted in a while. I got in the stand about 5:30AM so it was still dark. After sitting there in the dark for a few minutes something crawls up my leg and over my lap. I scream like a little girl because I didn't know what the frick was in the stand with me. I turn my light on and to my relief it was only flying squirrels.
They were just as freaked out as I was
So I let them be and we all settled down. 4 hours later they were huddled in the corner of the stand when I got down
I've hunted this stand multiple times since and they're still in there. They've gotten comfortable enough with me to sit and let me pet them.
I realize that they aren't dangerous animals, but during our initial encounter you would have thought I was being attacked by a tiger by my reaction.

In AIT in the Army in Arizona we were doing a field training exercise. Patrolling a fence line at night with a battle when we came across a skunk about 20 yards in front of us. We just stopped to watch at it as neither of us have ever seen a skunk before. All of a sudden a fricking mountain lion jumps over the fence, attacks the skunk, and jumps back over.
We noped the frick out of there.
And last year, I went for a hike, and decided to take a seat on the ground for a rest. I sat on a levee over looking a small creek. I did not see the snake damn near at my feet. It starts slithering very quickly towards me and I've never jumped so high in my life.

Numerous black bear encounters at the my hunting club in Georgia. First one I was walking to my stand during bow season and had my head lamp on. See two glowing eyes on the trail about 25-30 yards in front of me. I thinking shite just got busted by a deer. Well that deer started making noises that I have never heard a deer make and then started popping his jaws. I then see the eyes go from about deer level on the ground to about 6 ft when he stands up. Luckily the bear takes off but once the sun came up I saw where he had been clawing some of the pine trees in area.
Walking out one night after dark to my truck to our parking area at the skinning pole and walked up on a large boar bear eating of of the gut bucket. He hauled arse but never really left the tree line as a I could still see his eyes in the woods when I cranked my truck up.
Had a decent sized sow bear walk about 10 yards from me while sitting on the ground turkey hunting. Wind was behind me and she didn't smell me until she got past me and hauled arse.
this fricker scared the shite out of me walking to the stand one afternoon. He wasn't about 2.5 feet long but was unexpected to seem him in a mud puddle probably 3.4 mile from a river or pond.
Some of the black bears from our club
This one we call Brutus

You weren't in Gulf Shores were you? I helped pull a young girl out that was covered in tentacles about 20 years ago. She was messed up badly. Turned out she was also allergic to them.
No. St Augustine Beach.

For people who have a fear of dogs, even the big ones. If they are charging you or seem aggressive, I'd say 99% of the time if you get just as aggressive and even run towards them they will usually cower. Something I finally learned over the years. I use to stand still and hope they'd leave or yell at them. Finally one day I ran towards one and tried to kick it and that's worked every time since.
Medic and do windshields at homes obviously as a side job. Especially the medic part going into houses in middle of the night I'm use to mean dogs coming out. I've never had a situation where a big dog didn't back down when I ran towards it yelling at it. I've pissed some homeowners off also doing it but frick them, keep your damn dog away from me, especially when it's growling or acting aggressive.

After that the lights went on and I hit the remote to blow the trucks horn before leaving the house at night. And I'd look around from the doorway before walking out.
I definitely survey the driveway before going to the car. It's common to have one in the yard. Both black and brown.

Two black bears chased me off the Apalachee River in 2011. They could have caught me if they wanted, but i guess they just wanted to scare the everloving shite out of me.
Probably a baby nearby. I've encountered a few black bears and they've always been skiddish and fled. I've heard I'm just lucky I didn't encounter a mama with a cub nearby.
I wasn't in danger but I got scared like a little girl when I was face to face with the biggest barracuda I've ever seen while snorkeling once. Had to be 10 feet away at most, just floating there staring at me. It was in a reef basically on the beach in Turks and Caicos and the local guy who rented me the gear laughed and said "Thass jus Elvis the Cuda, he means no harm!"
Apparently that beast of a barracuda is used to humans snorkeling and just stares them down at point blank range a lot
Those teeth up close in the water are pretty intimidating and of course I had my nice silver watch on.

Bow hunting elk in Colorado in September’17. I was walking back to camp in the dark after an afternoon hunt following two friends riding mules. Saw a bright yellow light ahead of me off the trail to the right, thought it was a trail marker. When I got to where the “light” was, I looked to my right and it was now two bright yellow lights. I quickly realized it was eye balls and not lights. Switched my headlight from flood light to spotlight and it was a huge damn mountain lion couched off the trail facing me.
I had a pistol on my hip and pulled it and aimed it between his eyes and started screaming at him to go away. This only caused him to snarl at me twice and he finally turned and ran off. I went back there the next day and walked off where I saw him. It was 12 yards.
I hate to think what may have happened if I hadn’t seen him before I walked by.
Two days later, right before dark, I had a big black bear walk out in front of me about 15 yards and he never saw me. He heard me when I put my hand on my pistol and my bow release hit the pistol. He ran behind a bush and stood on his back legs looking at me for 10 damn minutes.

This is not the thread for telling war stories.
But in this instance we were on ambush about 3 miles outside of Khe Sanh. Ten Marines and one tiger (they can’t purr) which was in low growl mode like an idling 18-wheeler. Just kept pacing back in forth down in a small ravine about 10 yards from us.
I imagine it smelled us (or saw us) and was nervous. We could only hear it and see it’s shadow.
We were all kinda freaking, out of fear and excitement. Amazing, if it was gooks — people — we would not have hesitated to blow them away immediately. But “it was a frickin’ tiger, man”
We even radioed it to our CO. He ordered for us to wait about two more minutes, then frag it. Me and six other guys pulled out frags and waited. But the beast stood its ground and we wussed out. Eventually he eased on off and we sighed and chuckled in the pitch black of the Vietnam jungle. Plus, we didn’t want to give away our position because it was early and we had a long night ahead. Like most ambushes it turned out to be a lot of stress and lost sleep.
Today, I would think It must have looked like Mike just pacing back and forth in his cage. We were on his turf.
This is an awesome story. Thanks for sharing this experience

Not dangerous but semi-CSB
Me and a good sized group of people are camping on a island off the Australian coast. We have a good day messing around on the beach and drinking a good bit. Saw a koala in a tree between our campsite and the beach during the day. That was kinda cool.
Well the day ends and we are gathered around the camp fire eating some dinner and still drinking and what do you know that same koala walks right through our circle like it owned the place. Was surprised because those things are always just snoozing up in a tree. Heard there was a monster great white sighted the next week near our camp/where we went swimming but can't confirm if that was true.
Also saw a big salt water croc while I was over there on a different occasion. They shut down the beach before we got there but you could see it just chilling on the sand sunbathing if you got up on the rock wall by the parking lot.

Several cotton mouths and a few large gators while fishing in my pirogue. One was a long as my pirogue, I startled the gator while he was sunning on a matt of floating weeds. He started flopping around when he saw me, I gtfo quickly. Spooked me pretty good.
