Scary, yes.
Dangerous, no; not with competent pilot.

Saying that, I'm surprised a runway has any "hill" in it.

Runways at ATL have a noticeable dip at midportions. The ends of the runways are prob 10 ft higher

My gf refused to sit next to me on the plane in case we crashed.

That makes no sense. The crash was going to do a great job of spreading you out even if you sat together.

There have been quite a few of these throughout Europe due to this storm.

A flight from JFK to London made it in less that 5 hours due to the strong upper air winds powering the storm. It's a non-Concorde record.

Slackster, you probably saw this already but your post had me curious. Looks like almost 200 kt upper jet across the N Atlantic.

ATL has a pretty large incline on the north side runways.

The plan reached a top speed of 825 mph as it sought to arrive in England ahead of an oncoming winter storm.

My wife’s London to NOLA BA flight was canceled today. She got here via a different airline.

Do the passengers hear the sonic boom?
Does it even make one?

Although the BA plane was clocked apparently going faster than the speed of sound -- 767 mph -- it would not have breached the sonic barrier because it was being pushed by the air around it. Even when traveling at more than 800mph, the 747 was traveling much slower than the speed of sound relative to the air around it.

It was basically the mother of all tailwinds.

Flights were arriving 20%+ faster than scheduled.

Landed in Paris once where the plane was like that and tilted what felt like 45 degrees. I seriously thought the wing was going to hit the ground. Landing was quite smooth actually. Whole plane erupted in applause. Scariest and most satisfying landing I ever had.

I’m sure the pilots practice that in the simulator a bunch. My brother is a trainer for a major airline and has taken me into the simulator. It can simulate anything and feels totally realistic.

Just another day at the office for the pilot. Thank goodness.

Anytime you can look at your window and see the runway you are about to land on.... puckerup time.
