They are purchased separately at a relatively low cost.

Not exactly famous, but this should be a familiar name to the older crowd that remembers the Big Red Machine.

Alex Grammas was right next to my dad every step of the way as they island hopped in the Pacific. Alex is also 92, and I think they still talk several times a week.

FWIW. Dad played at Ole Miss. Alex played at MSU.

amn it, I didn't think about this when I planned my trip. I'm in Europe right now, and could have gone to Normandy for today.

I have not been to Normandy but my Dad went last year....said it was incredible.

This was basically the turning point in the war, a result of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's foolish pride. The Chinese overran us, cut us off, and slaughtered us

MacArthur was an overall piece of shite. Didn’t care about anything other than his own vain glory.

But the Chinese didn’t slaughter us, well they didn’t slaughter the Marines under Chesty Puller at least. Read a book called “The Last Stand of Fox Company” it details a single company holding MSR-1 open at Hagaru-ri open for the 1st Marine Division. A single company held off 7 Chinese regiments coming at them in waves. The Marines upon walking to safety marched in time into the gates. Chosin was one of the finest hours of the USMC history, up there with Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Hue City, Khe Sanh and Fallujah.

The Army on the other hand, did get their asses spanked big time at Chosin.

Back in 1968 I was a 17 year old kid on a high school trip to France. We made a day trip to Normandy. I was absolutely amazed and in awe of the cemetery and seeing the rows upon rows of markers. But what really struck me was seeing the beach that had to be crossed and the cliffs that had to be scaled in the face of enemy fire by brave young men who were about my age or a little older at the time of my visit.

There are no words that can convey my thanks to those men, or any man or woman, who has engaged in combat to protect our nation.

God Bless them all.

This is why I can’t stand when left wing liberals and kids scream the word “NAZI!”

They have no fricking clue what real nazis did and what our men had to face in situations like Normandy back then. A complete lack of disrepect to the people that had to live this terrible ordeal.

I, for one, have taught my kids and have exposed them to WWII stories and movies as much as I can so they know what these men did and what the world can turn into at any point.

Insane. I can't imagine the mindset upon exiting the landing craft or dropping on enemy lines.

Yeah let's just disparage an entire group on the action of a few, eh?

I would say the bulk of white males from the "Greatest Generation" - including (and perhaps even moreso) those in the military were involved in shameful levels of racism. The average experience of a black WWII vet was absolutely deplorable - and this includes largely being excluded from the benefits of the GI Bill.

We can acknowledge wartime heroism without having to always drift into hagiography. The "Greatest Generation" were deeply flawed humans - probably no better than any other generational humans. (Except the Baby Boomers - I think they actually were bad. )

Medger Evers was a civil rights leader who was assassinated in his driveway in Jackson in the 60s.

Everyone was. You can’t judge 1940s people based on 2018 morality.
