We had a $5K limit at our store. If the customer demanded to purchase their new Rolls Royce on their Black American Express we added 5% - most retail customers don’t have a clue CC companies charge these fees to the retail store.

I tend to not do business with a place that doesn't take credit cards.
If a business doesn’t take AMEX I won’t go back and I will tell the owner/Person working that.
I am petty as hell, I know lol

I wouldn't be surprised if physical cash is going to be obsolete in the next few years. It's all going to be card, or app.

Isn’t it not written off as an expense? Therefore you really aren’t taking such a huge hit.

I've always assumed the business was working those fees into their prices already. If they're not, shame on them.

We have shopped around for a year. Sure if all of our customers actually swiped their cards it will get lower but 90% of credit card users give us a credit card over the phone because it is their second or rental home and they are never in town.
The cc company’s rate going higher if you cannot actually swipe the card
It’s a scam

American Express is usually the highest rate of all the cards...

120k for people to use their credit card/year is a huge pinch to our bottom line

Ran an ISO for 10nyears. If you want a totally legal way to pass all fees, I do that for larger accounts.
Sounds like you guys process around 300k per month.

Yes depending on the business a 3% fee is completely normal

People are turned off by retailers doing it explicitly.
Easy way around that, pro rata credit / total sales x 3.5% and add it to your prices.
It’s cheesy to add it on to just credit purchases. But again, this all depends on type of business.
If it’s something I might negotiate, like a car or appliance, I don’t expect them to take a card knowing good and well they will lose 2-3% on the deal.
High margin like restaurants, just build it in.

My guess is he is trying to profit. Again, bad look.
Or maybe not. Again, what type of business makes a difference

There are gateways that control the "downgrade" and keep it placed in a high interchange category if done correctly.
It's simple to formulate of you work thru someone with a grasp of interchange and evolving software enhancements in the market.

I chalk it up as a cost of doing business. See what happens when you stop offering credit cards

I work for a national company and our locations in other states charge a processing fee. However apparently it is illegal in Texas fwiw.

Pretty sure your CC service agreement prevents you from charging for it. And, imagine how much business you would lose if you did not allow customers to use CCs. Cost of doing business.

How about you do like other businesses and give a discount to those who use cash? This way, you won't have to tell people that there is a fee for using the plastic, and instead can tell them there is a discount when paid with cash.
Also I select 'credit' at bullshite stores just because they charge more to process (compared to debit).
