3-4 sacks a hour so around 21-28# of tailmeat an hour

Also most do pay by the pound

Let's just say they do 25 ibs per hour.

Someone said 10 hours per day. That is $250 per day, $1250 per week.

You would think there are a bunch of single moms out there working other menial labor jobs who would be all over that.

$12 as a cashier at the convenience store or $25 peeling crawfish.

Exactly

And I imagine $12/hour in these small southern LA towns is the high end.

Putting peelers on the market as road grade. What a brilliant idea

So why aren’t they walking into these plants asking for the jobs

Some plants have hired temp services to find workers - aren’t a lot of takers

I’m sure, somehow, the surplus of unpeeled crawfish will still make prices rise.

Someone I know manages the commercial land for a company. They are building and tearing down shite all the time and every single field worker have temporary visas. I think they work for 6 months, have to go back home for a few weeks, I apply for the temp visa again, go back to work for another 6 months.

But I know two crawfish distributors (also peeling plants) that if you go pass by there tomorrow every worker is Mexican. And the distributors let them bastards deliver crawfish in the company truck (the trucks where they are able to deliver a bunch of sacks at once and have them on ice) all over the place, baton rouge, new orleans, etc and they don't have drivers license.

I remember back in the day... late 80s/ early 90s maybe. My brother worked for a crawfish distributor and he had to bring crawfish to New Orleans on a regular basis. He got another job so he left, but a few months after he left the dude who owned the business got arrested and eventually did some time. He was moving more than crawfish so every time I see a crawfish company vehicle and its a Mexican driving I wonder if they are moving more than crawfish and if the truck ever gets stopped and the cops find the illegal products would the owners just deny knowing anything about the drugs and blame it on the Mexican.

As I said earlier. They don't want these jobs.

Sorry didn't realize who I was talking to or your tone.

I don't know. Having never been in a crawfish processing operation. I have no idea about the working conditions.

I did spend a year in a cold room, but it was cold and sterile, and looking through a microscope all night. That was bad enough.

I realize that doesn't compare to the stench and manual labor that must come with peeling crawfish. However, if you live in the poor South and are broke, $1250 per week sounds pretty good.

Well the demand for tailmeat is way higher than it used to be Female family members of basin crawfishermen who barely exist today or local Vietnamese ladies who families worked in seafood businesses

And to add to that, annual farmed raised crawfish harvest in Louisiana today is about 4 times larger (~ 200 million lbs) than it was in the late 80s-mid 90s (~ 50 million lbs) when labor for peeling was primarily Louisiana and Vietnamese residents - hence there is an incredible demand-need for seasonal labor to peel crawfish that aren’t sold for the live market (peeling is seasonal, labor is only needed to peel for 4-5 months).

Mechanical crawfish peeling machinery has been developed and patented over the past 4 decades, but none have been perfected & adopted by the industry.

Or they could sell them live locally at a lower price which would increase demand. No that’s crazy.

Peelers can be bought at a discount from market price most seasons. Once again, who wants to boil and peel only small sub-market sized crawfish that usually get peeled for tailmeat?

Peelers are already lower priced
The live/boiled market can’t move all the crawfish
How can you not understand this?

The average OT'er knows better than industry experts.

I applaud you for trying to educate these guys, but it is an exercise in futility. Everyone knows better than people who do this shite for a living.
