A lot people use it as an opportunity to sound smart. They don't realize that no one is impressed.

You don't have to be overly-formal when interacting with people via email to still be professional. It usually just comes off as pretentious.

This is the correct answer. Be professional, but interacting the way the OP described is ridiculous.

This.

It's akin to using legalese. Please communicate/write in plain English.

The dude described in the OP may have been burned more than once in the past and now is being overly cautious.

You don't have some sort of messaging system that you could use for less formal communication? Something like Lync, or Skype for business?

Typically, if I have a question for a co-worker I use that, and none of those convos are formal. If I'm communicating with a client I'll use email, and will probably be more formal.

The head of our little place of joy absolutely reads emails.

We don't joke. We don't comment on Debbie's outfit and her tits. We don't share links.

Probably.

New emails always get the person's name, comma, skip a line, what I need to say, skip a line, and Thanks. after that it is just enough to get what info I need or is needed of me. But no slang or anything that a nun could consider vulgar.

I find I have been using 10-4 a lot lately.

its frustrating

if someone writes me a question that I do not know, I'll respond like this

"I'm not sure. Let me look into it and I'll get back to you

Thanks,
Salmon"

It's not overly formal and it's not overly slang. It's just common language. This shouldn't be so hard.

Dear Pecker,

Please note that I slapped Debbie's big tits with a backhand this morning in the Men's Lavatory. Update to follow under separate cover.

Anything worth doing is worth correctly doing.

I'd rather have too much communication than too little.

Dear OP,

Please advise on how I should structure my emails in the future.

Best regards,

Thank you. This is the stuff, like you mentioned, that frustrates people with corporate environments. Be respectful and polite, but damn have some semblance of a person underneath that suit and tie.
