It's certainly not for everyone, but so long as your responses are appropriate for your business/office setting than it isn't necessarily "overly formal".

Emails should be appropriate and depending on where in the country you live and work, what your profession is, etc it can change quite dramatically.

It's called being professional. Things like this are what separates us directors/VPs/executives from the rest of you plebs.

Just talk to me like you would face to face. If you do each differently I have to figure out which one of you is the fake one and I don't have time for that.

Serious answer to the OP - if you don't know how to write well to start with, trying to be formal doesn't help. Some of the most mangled sentence structure I've ever seen was written by someone barely literate trying to be formal. I used to live at an apartment complex where we'd sometimes get gems along these lines:

"The management, would like to inform tenants that, because of the recent storms we have had issues with flooding, and if your unit was effected you should contact us immediately."

Notice "effected" instead of "affected" and commas in random places. Also, there is no need to ask for permission to inform tenants.

Not counting vacation, don't think I've ever let it get over 100 unread emails.
If it's something I need to address later, I'll just flag it. But I have seeing a ton of unread emails in my inbox.

It's unfortunate that the text messaging world has made its way to business correspondence. There was a time when people took pride in the way they communicated with one another. The people that still communicate like civilized individuals are usually the ones that are in a managerial role. They recognize the importance of decorum and professionalism in the work place.

Besides, pretty much everything you write is discoverable in litigation. Nothing worse than having senior management ask who the dipshit is that can't compose a proper sentence when your emails are integral to litigation. I don't write a single email that I wouldn't mind someone else reading.

Do y'all use greetings after the first reply? I usually just use their name and a comma.

All true. But that doesn't require overly formulaic and pendantic intra-office emails.

I work in a professional environment so emails are expected to be professional in manner. Plus my company monitors the hell out of emails

Exactly!

Emails are generally kept for around 7 years as legal documents.

I have asked people to take me off their joke email list. I will joke with them in person but not thru company emails.
