Coworkers Who Are Overly Formal Emails?

Are people worried about being spied on or something? I understand not sending dick pics or weekend conquests, but there are some people in our company who send emails like they're conversing with the President. Is this industry-dependent (I work for an engineering firm)?
There's this guy in my office who I talk to daily. He's super laid back, outgoing, and really chill in person. When I email him, though, his responses sound like a robot. I'll ask him a quick question via email, and he'll respond "good afternoon, I am unaware the answer to your question, have a good day" when a simple "sorry man, don't know" response would have done just fine.
Always weirds me out. Should I be more formal in emails?

He keeps it that way with everyone as NEVER to be misunderstood as anything but a professional and direct response. He's doing the C.Y.A. method of "written" inter-office communications.

I typically type in a well-mannered way. Quite similar to which you described in your post.

I think it should be more formal than "Sorry man, don't know".
You never know when an email chain will be bounced around and meet some powerful eyes, so you want to seem sufficiently professional in your work responses and inquiries.

I work in a professional environment so emails are expected to be professional in manner.
Plus my company monitors the hell out of emails

Why don't you ask your co-worker (the "chill" one) if there is something within the company that makes this necessary. If many others do it and you do not, it MAY be due to a company policy about which you know nothing.
Why are they trying to get rid of you?

that weirds me out as well
almost as much as some 65 year old senior manager typing "lol" in a work e-mail

Engineers are socially awkward douchenozzles. See (ie.) the majority of the posters on this board.

Pretty sure not one coworker has ever been an email.

Always weirds me out.

This.

And this.
Every work email I send is formal. It starts with a formal greeting, uses completed sentences and paragraphs, ends with a thank you, etc...
You never know who will see those emails down the line and it's always best to be professional.
Profesionalism is one of those things that that the old people who run businesses appreciate and it's just another way to get ahead in life. Plus it's a sign of adulthood, maturity, and business sense.

I was letting him have a pass on that one since he is already gun-shy due to his inability to be clear on important matters.
You are mean.

I learned my lesson real fast. A coworker accidentally forwarded an email to the entire group that had emoticons and shite in it from me. Granted I was less than a year out of college, but it was embarrassing as all hell.

It's called being professional. Things like this are what separates us directors/VPs/executives from the rest of you plebs.

True. Its just a forever-cya type thing. I remember back in my HCA days we had to keep everything that was written between employees. Nothing could go in trash. NOTHING. HCA was under investigation by the feds. Our smallish hospital had storage units filled with boxes of paper. That led to all employees being as you described.

Side note: Nothing pisses me off more than a detailed email asking for multiple, or a specific answer, and your co-worker simply replies, "No."

Dear OP,
If you have to question why you should be professional in a professional setting, you may need to rethink your line of work.
Sincerely,

A lot people use it as an opportunity to sound smart. They don't realize that no one is impressed.
You don't have to be overly-formal when interacting with people via email to still be professional. It usually just comes off as pretentious.
