I have been invited to have lunch with some people from work to celebrate a co-worker's birthday. I had not heard of the restaurant so I looked it up online for the address. I found out that it is a vegan restaurant. I looked at the menu and there is not one thing on it that I would be willing to eat. My choices are to go, order a drink, and say that I am not hungry or to not go and send a gift with someone who is going. Has anyone ever been in a situation like this and what did you do?

Don't be such a fricking pussy.

Just go. Then try something. You might actually like it. If not, no harm done.

You’re not obligated to hangout with your co-workers. Most of them are likely phonies that want any ammunition regarding your personal life to gossip about or use against you.
Cash the paycheck and hang with your family/friends during your free time.

Shiloh can give you some good suggestions that may be off menu. Start with a lemongrass shot maybe?

You might like grilled vegetables (especially if you like mushrooms) (go heavy on the portobellos).
Or Hummus with extra sesame oil and red peppers.

Actually I do. I have been teaching in a psychiatric hospital for emotionally disturbed kids/teens for the better part of 3 decades. I find communicating and connecting with them to be easier than doing the same with my coworkers, most of whom are recent college grads.

Bring a ziplock full of grilled steak or chicken strips. Order the salad. Dump the aforementioned strips on the salad. It’s a win/win. Decent meal and you avoid getting invited to these things again.

Well yeah, you've been communicating with the emotionally disturbed kids/teens for a lot longer. Maybe you have Stockholm Syndrome.

When vegan look for Indian or south Asian inspired dishes for the most flavor.
Or just get a salad.
I don't like vegan but can do vegan Indian food.

Is it mandatory?

I don’t go to anything that is not required as a condition of employment.

You just fricking go dumbass. Us adults have to do shite we don’t like all the time.

But also, they’re clueless for picking a vegan only restaurant. Sound like the whole organization may be low brow

Yep, I had a luncheon with higher ups a couple months ago that had Vegan sandwiches as the only option for lunch...probably one of the last things I would want to eat for lunch.

However, as this poster said, sometimes you just have to suck it up, eat whatever they're serving, make it seem like you enjoyed it...and then later if you want to eat a big snack/dinner then go for it.

I do understand that I have a vegan colleague, and she deserves to have an option of what to eat, but she's doing it by choice it seems and I do agree that serving a Vegan-only lunch felt strange and just out of touch with how most people eat.

I think, in my case, they should have said, "If you don't want the Vegan food, please feel free to bring your own lunch." And, in your case, they should have picked a restaurant that accommodates everyone.

But, you still gotta go...like it or not.

this is a bit childish
just order something edible. I’ve been to MJ’s Cafe in BR and their vegan food wasn’t bad at all.

I love meat, but vegetables are great, too. Eating ONE VEGAN MEAL is not a problem, at all.
