That must have been really tough for you. I'm proud of you.

And fwiw, not wanting to have kids is mostly a selfish act but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Being selfish doesn't have to carry a negative connotation.

I've never understood why people that don't want kids are considered selfish....and why SOME people, not all, that have several children act as though they are making some grand contribution to society. Have kids...don't have kids...who cares?

I won't deny that it's selfish.

I just think it's funny when people call it selfish and then give the "you need someone to take care of you when you're old" spiel... you know, the most selfish possible reason for reproducing.

Yeah I'm not going to say that everyone who has kids is brilliant, because then the rant wouldn't exist

It seems like the "no kids" crowd screams the longest and loudest. Probably because their lives are so empty.

I'm going hug my son and enjoy the gift of unconditional love. Y'all go buy something or whatever gives you fulfillment.

Such an asinine thing to say really.

I was kidding really. But on a serious note, I have no plans to pay for college. The idea that parents owe it to their kids to pay for college is just bizarre.

ask all the old people whose kids never come to visit them in the old folks home how they feel about unconditional love.

you may find out that unconditional love isn't always reciprocal

Wrong. Having kids is selfish. Who the frick are you to bring a being out of non-existence into this thresher (true detective quote)?

No, but seriously- most people have kids for selfish reasons: they want someone to love them, they want to repair the mistakes their parents made, they want to leave their mark on the world, etc.

Don't be naive- having kids is the most selfish act there is. You might not want to admit it, but having a child does absolutely NOTHING but satisfy some unconscious psychological and/or biological need for the parent. It's not about the child because the child didn't fricking exist until you selfishly created it for your own fulfillment!

Freaking this. I love my kids to death, but they are a handful. And whoever says it's how they are raised has never had identical twins. They are two and have been in the same controled enviroment their entire life and couldn't be more different. I can promise you with 100% certainty that I would not have gone for 3. We finally decided to have a second and out came two of those suckers.

not sure. My boss and his wife just turned 40 and have no kids and are probably the happiest couple I know.

FYI- I want kids but it is interesting seeing how much happier they are than almost every other couple I know.

I'm just glad I waited til mid 30's to start. My 20's and early 30's were my best years. Especially the last 5 years before kids when I was making enough money to play and road trip a couple times a month.

Dear Lord, some of you must have had some completely fricked up childhoods to have such warped perceptions.

Doubt it. What he said is true. And yea, the way people ask about when we're having kids is rude and it gets old. People get offended like you're insulting their kids or their decision to have kids simply because you don't want them.

I love these threads where people go to such lengths to try to prove that their life choices were the best and then project them on to others with such conviction.

IDGAF if you have kids, dont have kids, have a polluted womb or whatever.

If you have kids and dont want them, then you are POS.

If you dont have kids and want them then prayers sent.

If you dont have kids and dont want them then "yay for you."

if you have kids and love them, then "good job by you"

His (and your) opinion are fact?

I thought you non parents were supposed to be smart.

ETA:

Nevermind, I reread his post, selfishness requires conscious effort so he is definitely wrong.

Likely not something they will regret until they grow too old to take care of themselves.
