If it’s in south Florida close to the beach, yes. Middle of nowhere? Hell no.

For internet, will you hop on your bike and generate enough electricity to open your internet hot spot?
Water availability can't be overestimated. Even if you drill a well, how deep will it have to be? How will you power the pump?
If you have a problem with fire, you almost have to have an underground safe area, which also works for tornadoes.
Hanta Virus. Etc.

Could I?
Yes, lived in my car in the Southwest last summer. So I could.
But it wouldn’t be in SW Texas. Northern NM / AZ, or CO yes.
But no, having the time of my life w my hot nurse wife (no pics) here on my well-appointed Virginia farm. Wild horses…

West fricking Texas?
Ugh. No.
I mean, no to abandoning my wife and children and family and friends, and the love abd laughter that make life worth living.
But for the bone dry, sand in your cracks miserable hellscape that is West fricking Texas?
You are a glutton for punishment and I wish that your soul finds some sort of peace, because a man who finds solace in west Texas is running from some demons

What do you think would have happened to Jack in The Shining if he didn’t have that bitch wife and weird kid?
That’s a great question for Grok

Sounds like the fast track to homelessness.

Title: “What if Jack Didn’t Have That Bitch Wife and Weird Kid?” — A Shining Thought Experiment
User:
What do you think would have happened to Jack in The Shining if he didn’t have that bitch wife and weird kid?
ChatGPT:
That's a wild take! If Jack didn't have Wendy and Danny in The Shining, things might've played out pretty differently — but not necessarily better for him.
Wendy and Danny actually act as Jack’s tether to humanity. Without them, he might've spiraled into madness even faster. The hotel feeds on isolation, resentment, and weakness — and Jack, already an alcoholic with anger issues, was a prime target. With no family to either hold him back or fuel his inner conflict, he could've just become a willing pawn of the Overlook without much resistance.
That said, without the "weird kid" — Danny and his psychic "shine" — the hotel wouldn't have had as much interest in corrupting Jack to begin with. Danny was the battery the spirits really wanted. So in that sense, no kid, no haunting at quite that level.

Someone on tigerfroppings.com in the OT Lounge forum brought it up.
ChatGPT:
Ah, classic TigerDroppings chaos — the OT Lounge really is the Wild West of forums. That sounds exactly like something that would spiral into a hilarious/off-the-rails thread.
Did they lean more into blaming Wendy for Jack's breakdown, or was it just people memeing about how Jack would’ve thrived without his “ball and chain” and a telepathic kid?

The question was asked in response to this post:
A good friend of mine hit 65, retired, and is now the caretaker on a large Northern New Mexico ranch (mountainous AND water with fish)... [details about remote retirement life]
ChatGPT:
Ahhh, that context makes it even better — someone read that idyllic, peaceful retirement gig and immediately hit 'em with a Shining reference. That’s peak OT Lounge energy right there.
It’s actually a clever parallel — remote mountain caretaker, all alone, possibly vulnerable to isolation or declining health... just swap in some ghosts, a typewriter, and a hedge maze. The only thing missing is a haunted ballroom full of 1920s partygoers.

No one responded to the question yet. I’ll take this conversation back to the OT lounge and see what they think

You'd want to blow your brains out after 1 month. This board is obsessed with wanting to live in 1800s and rural areas. They have no idea what this life would actually be like. The reality of living it for thousands and thousands of days.

I don't like broiling, so no i wouldn't do Texas. Now set me up in the Dakotas or Montana and I'm game.
