Let me correct it. Her path was ultimately downstream. But to take the path she took, she would have been swimming upstream the entire way

Basically her highlighted path is impossible with the current movement of the river right now

The other thread mentioned that halfway across you get an upstream eddy. So basically half the swim was downstream and the other half upstream. They think she caught the current just right and basically coasted the second half of the swim to make it.

Id love to hear from hydrological types lurking here how that river current really works. I know itll pull you uder but maybe in certain places its just surface current? thats some massive turbulent flow either way. Crazy stuff.

I've been out in the main channel in a kayaks plenty of times and felt the power of that river. No way could I swim that.

frick no, we bet a buddy he couldn't, went downtown, he got in water, started to get pulled by river, and swam the frick out of water and paid us all.

I watched a tugboat get pulled under by the current and undertow. Right by where President Casino used to sit in St.Louis riverfront.

Been a while since I’ve heard the story, but my dad’s buddy said The two of them and another guy did it in the early 70s. Jumped in around algiers point and made it across somewhere around Mereaux where they were warmly greeted by a few St Bernard deputies and other various LEOs. Didn’t go to jail but they were held up a long time and thought they were in deep shite.

My dads a pretty reserved guy but apparently had a daredevil streak in his younger days. He’s never copped to this one, but now that we’re all grown & not quite as impressionable, I’ll ask him for more details next time we talk.

I’ve seen people swim the river when it’s low.The current now is tremendously more than the when it is low. You are a complete idiot if you tried to swim that river right now.

Do you just assume the current is straight down or something?

My mom lives across the street from the levee and I take the ferry at times. I've seen the river in action a time or two..

Right now no. When the river is low I’d have a better chance but would never try.

I'm on your level. I'm built for distance, not speed. Lol
I swam in a distance event a long time ago in Baton Rouge. I came in second behind the Tara high school swim coach.

I always wondered this, but with boat traffic I wouldn’t try it. My assumption has always been yes, and I think it’d be much easier than everyone makes it out to be. The currents would essentially do the work for you, there’s no fighting them, just tread and float until you hit a bend in the river and swim the last few meters. I think it comes down to how long can you stay afloat by alternating between floating and treading, and I think if my life depended on it, six hours wouldn’t be a stretch.

Now the REAL answer is that I think the average OTer could likely cross it with a well timed running leap.
