Spin off from the Amanda Knox thread. You see this as a viable defense in court cases where defense attorney argue that their client was tricked/coerced into a confession. Under the stress of being questioned by police (without torture, beatings, days of sleep deprivation, etc.), do you think you could issue a detailed confession for something you absolutely had no role in?

I'm not talking about getting a detail wrong or forgetting that you met someone at 8 PM instead of 10 PM. I'm talking about confessing to a murder in one location when you weren't even in the same city that day.

For me, No. But I can easily see how someone can be manipulated into confessing.

I don't know about murder, especially coming up with details that could either put the needle in your arm, or get you off completely.

I do know that when I was a kid, a friend left a watch at my house. I found it in my brothers room, thinking it was his i wore it to school. Friend accused me of stealing it. Well long story short, I denied stealing it after being accused of it. Dad was the principal of my school, suspended me until I confessed. Promised I would get back in school. Well after a few days I made a confession out of thin air, and got kicked out for the remainder of the year.

So kids can be coerced. I am sure weak minded adults under enormous stress can. But details are hard to make up.

My ultimate fear is going to the big house, so there's no way in hell I'd confess.

Not unintentionally.

If they threatened someone I cared about if I didn't confess, then yes. But they would have to have someone I cared about hostage or threaten to kill them or some shite.

But I can't imagine a scenario where I was so confused I confessed to killing someone or whatever crime unintentionally.

When people get arrested, they freak out. Cops will also lie to people to get them to talk. They can say just about anything. "I'll go arrest your so, spouse, parents. etc." I'll put it on the news that you were arrested for rape, kiddy porn, etc." The worst part is, it is totally legal to do.

This. I do like my sleep though.

If sleep deprivation techniques are used on me I'd confess to sabotaging the Hindenburg just to get some Z's.

Absolutely not. Partly because I don't like police officers. Party because I know that they will only be trying to frick me by talking to me.

Never talk to a fricking cop.

Not tricked/coerced in this way Brendan Dasse style. Not that I think I could be without a lawyer, but it certainly wouldn't happen as I'd never talk to a cop in a police station without a lawyer.

But if I had a lawyer and a situation played out where I could confess and get some plea for probation or minimal jail time or risk 20+ or life in jail or something crazy like that, I'd confess in a heartbeat. Risk/reward.

I don't think this is how it works. They have it written up, and you just sign it.

One of my good friends was tricked into signing a confession for something that he didn't do. He was a minor at the time, and they were illegally interrogating him without counsel or informing his parents. They kept him for hours and eventually convinced him that the only way that he was ever going to be able to go home was to sign this piece of paper that he didn't even know what it was. Then they let him call his dad afterwords. The confession stuck, and he ended up being advised by his attorney to plead guilty. Because he was a minor it ended up being expungeable is probably why they took that route.

It was very stupid of him, but he was very young and didn't know better. Now as an adult we all know that some police don't care about honesty or actually finding the people who committed the crime. I don't think I could be forced into one now as an adult unless they did legit torture. Thankfully at least we aren't Saudi Arabia, so I don't think that would happen.
