The Korean thread got me wondering . Could America handle the casualties associated with a war similar to WW2 or Korea ? I know Vietnam had a high rate but it lasted longer than Korea or WW2. How many dead would cause the general population to turn against war. I understand that the reasons for said war could be vastly different . ( America attached vs another Korea )

Today's youth would make the number of conscientious objectors and draft dodgers from the Vietnam War look like child's play.

depends on what was at stake. if it is just one of those bullshite political wars, tolerance would be pretty slim. however, we have shown that if an aggressor threatens our security or our freedom, we will roll over a country in a heartbeat.

Lots of good kids in today’s youth as well. This is a topic I often ponder . Think about some of the causality rates from WW1 battles . I wonder how the American public would react to that .

I think if there was a major threat be it war, contagion, etc you’d see a pretty rapid change in the populace towards one another. Even most of our poor have it pretty damn good compared to many places and I think by in large our society is just kind of bored/addicted to bullshite. If shite hit the fan I think we’d be surprised by our response. I think there is still a national survival instinct buried in there amongst the 70 gender pronouns, and online grocery delivery services...but it’ll take something big to wake it up.

Agree.

We could probably stomach a real war if it was a true existential threat

I think Americans could handle it up until the point they brought the draft back. You bring the draft into play and tolerance of war would go way down knowing you or your children, depending on your age of course, could be sent somewhere.

Trench warfare is a thing of the past. The number of casualties on the battlefront would be much smaller than in wars of the 20th century. Drones, smart bombs, etc. would be the norm.
However, the use of sophisticated bombs on America could cause enormous casualties.
So, fortunately, America wouldn't need the huge numbers of young adults on the front line, but we had better be prepared for much worse at any location.
I honestly think America would do extremely well in any warlike engagement with our advanced skills.

A political war would be disaster today but if we were attacked they wouldn't have a voice.

Good question. I mean one were it’s is an all out battle. Casualty rates are high and civilian causlities are accepted . Korea and Vietnam to a degree are the last one of these wars the US has been involved in. The first gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq we didn’t go just go complete blitz in the resisters like Korea or WW2

Wonderful point and I apologize . Real war is a wrong way to ask. Total war better phrase .

Eta . I know people who have lost lot more than limbs in these wars so I apologize to anyone for a bad phrased question

Considering our nat'l defense budget + technology and advancement of tactics, I hope Americans would be pretty pissed at the failed leadership.
