re: Could AI take your job?

I pretty much tell control room operators how things operate. Fortunately none of those people are smart enough to use AI so I’m safe for now

a sneaky profession that could be doomed is engineering and architectural design. Those professions will still be needed for construction but the design phase is completely automate-able. 100%

Not yet, but soon. Advisory/consulting as a whole is going to be decimated.

haha if you have worked with AI i promise...its not a part time job catching mistakes it makes, not even close. not in traditional engineering at least.

seriously...have you ever tried to use AI for engineering problems? its not close to capable enough right now

and what yall think an engineer does for the most part in South LA.....is so off base

maybe a consulting engineer where all they do is look at drawings and work new construction....sure.

but there is a ton of real world experience to work in the industrial side, you have to have tribal knowledge.

let me know when AI is intrinsically safe, can put on a harness to climb out on a structure, perform an evaluation of a piece of equipment while taking measurements, readings and etc.

all while working in an operating refinery where the conditions are.....should I say less than optimal operating conditions for a AI robot

not to mention on large pieces of equipment, structures etc. the best scan out is still =/- 10mm on top of having to be on a stable surface with uninterrupted line of site, has to be a certain distance from equipment and cant handle vibration




even AI says the probability of it ever being able to replace what I do is under 5%. But said that there is a 90% probability that it will make me way way more efficient & help me automate many task. Says even the chances of advanced robotic and drone systems being able to take my job is under 5% because of the specialty work I do and a human still having to be involved to make decisions based on the economics and actually put hands on equipment

so for those saying engineering will go away...not in brownfield and not in the industrial setting

now huge firms like Becht where they like to consult with manufactures and update specs...i would be worried about that.

now it will limit how many new engineers are needed for a lot of the busy work.

Scruffy is right.
Right now, in law, there is still somewhat of a garbage-in, garbage-out phenomenon, and a need for experienced lawyers who learned the hard way how to think and write. And communicate. Show up at the golf course, closing tables, and courtrooms.

But the time and effort it takes to do the vast majority of legal work has been drastically reduced. And the incentives to hire young lawyers and try to train them while they poop out AI slop are very low.
Paralegals and other staff will be largely obsolete very soon.

Crazy times.
