Lazy River, two dozen Diversity vice presidents, and a huge liability premium in case some fratstar does something stupid.

Part of it is less funding from the state and the other part is that administration has gotten way too bloated.
Schools always want to blame cuts in state funding, but the growth in administrative costs is also a huge factor. I don’t know why we can’t have a bare-bones college experience. No fancy dorms, no mental health counseling, no multi-million dollar rec center. All of that stuff is great if you want it, and you should be able to pay for those services individually if you want them. I feel like colleges could step into that market space and make a killing.

There also wasn’t TOPS in 1992 either.
Now that the state covers a good chunk of tuition....of course LA universities will raise it.
Even though Louisiana is basically just paying for the education of future Texas residents.
ETA: I realize tuition nationwide has gone up....just mentioning one factor for LA schools

You may be underestimating the extent colleges and universities have to compete for quality students, just like athletic departments.

I agree, but I think costs have gotten to a point where a college could really sell a less expensive college experience. There are plenty of quality students who don’t want to graduate with a mountain of debt.

They already have this option....it’s called community college.

But I guess about 10k for 4 years is not too bad after all.

LSU’s website says about 12k a year in tuition and fees. Where did you get 9200 a semester? Out of state tuition?

Is having a/c really spoiled?
And anyway those "spoiled" kids that live in those expensive dorms had no say in the decision to have them built. They were probably in elementary school when they were approved.
My son is at a University where most freshman dorms have no AC and are small with cinderblock walls. And it draws some decent students with an average SAT of well above 1400. And they have a crappy football team. They do have small classes and a lot of experienced professors.

When I attended LSU in the late 60's and early 70's, I lived in South Stadium because I was not rich and it was the cheapest dorm -- for a reason. The expensive dorms had ac but S Stadium did not. Power dorm was much better then. But I have fond memories of my stay in the dorm.

What are they selling for the cost increase?
This sweet arse pool, duh!!!!!
This is the answer.
The arms race for dorms, facilities, libraries, etc. is accelerating the costs. 20 years ago you had one bathroom on the floor of a dorm, and now you have apartments and suites. A Student Union consisted of offices and a ballroom, now you have full service spas, movie theaters, etc.
With all my that said LSU is embarrassingly cheap. In the ‘90s, in state tuition with room and board at UConn was about $9k/yr, and they pushed a $1 billion infrastructure upgrade. Emmert brought the “UConn 2000” plan to LSU and rebranded it as the “Flagship” agenda. It obviously didn’t take, but If LSU ever chooses to be nationally competitive, it could simply double or triple its tuition, and reinvest the difference....and it would still equal or cheaper than equivalent state schools.

I am curious about what school that is, I mean Stanford avg SAT scores is about 1450-1460.

Exactly.. Or IT/trade school. An in today's world, unless you are going to school to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, engineer, architect, work in media (and maybe a few more I am missing) it's makes more sense to go down the IT/trade school route than paying for 4 years of college.

On top of that, I would have to pay for housing up there. Who is their right mind would pay that much to go to a state school?
Look at out of state cost at LSU

It's not 9200 a semester. 12 hours is around 5900 which is still retarded.
