92 was $1024/semester at LSU when I first started
I remember my mom signing a blank check and me walking thru the LSU field house to register in 90. That check I completed was never over $1,200.00. Now I have to write a check for $1,900 next month to pay all these ridiculous fees for my son. I'm happy to do it for him, but frustrating most of it is for "Requires Activity fee" and "Student Excellence Fee".

I didn't miss the lines of Walk through registration, but there was so much information to be gained about clubs on the campus.

The interest on the loans pay for Obamacare. That’s the truth

Its no different than houses, cars, etc. All have gone up well past the rate of inflation.
They are selling you renovations upgrades in facilities.

I believe the return on a degree has already gone negative for many universities and disciplines

The federal government takeover of the student loan business is really what caused this

historically, undergrad programs have not been/were not meant to be profit centers for universities

I think tuition was a little over 1k when I started in 1996. I pay 12k per year for private school anyway right now. Assuming my daughter gets tops I'll get a raise when she starts college. We live 8 miles or so from campus. She can commute or get a job and pay for her own housing.

New trucks were under 20K back then too. A bag of chips and cost of building has tripled in price too.

At least in LA, the state decreased funding, so the schools increased tuition to make up for it
THIS.
I was at a session a couple of years ago in which LSU tuition was discussed. Back in the 80s, for instance, the cost of college tuition for in-state students was subsidized by the state to the tuneof 75%. That was for ALL students, and as LSU had open admissions at the time, basically as long as you had a high school diploma, you could go to LSU and get that subsidized tuition.
And there were a BOATLOAD of students who shouldn't have been in college who took advantage of that subsidy for a year or so and flunked out or quit.
Now, the in-state tuition is only subsidized to the tune of 25%. And TOPS essentially takes the place of the subsidy, but only for those who make good grades/test scores.
Dorms/on-campus housing is a different animal. Back in the 80s you had dorms like Stadium and Pentagon; 50 years old or more, with basic accommodations and no A/C. Spoiled kids today can't hack that.

I hadn't really thought too much about the rise in tuition over the years, it is like everything else, it costs what it costs and outside reminiscing about things like paying .65 a gallon for gas I actually try to avoid the thoughts.
This thread got me wondering how much my schools had gone up. In undergrad, the tuition was right at 12k a year in the late 80s with room and board it is $59k now. My law school was $20k a year in the early 90s now it is $61k (those numbers don't include room and board). My education today would cost over $450K if you include books along with a place to live and food for the 3 years in law school.
That's a frickton of money, but we did have nice libraries.

Because it’s hard to know the true value of a degree from a university, most people begin to equate cost with value. “Oh, look at the tuition. This university must be good.” Universities have figured this out. This is why at some places the tuition is $50,000 a semester but every student gets a $40,000 “scholarship” .
