I understand that many things on Twitter are over exaggerated or even hyperbole. I’m far from being a dietician, but I found this tweet interesting in how there are ingredients in our food here that are illegal in most other places in the world. I’d like to hear from people more knowledgeable than I am about this.

A lot of our food system was based off food scarcity. We obviously have surpassed that.

Now do a graph with obesity rates

Also the majority of our health care costs are wasted in the last year of life on people that have 0 quality of life.

You’re on the money. I highly suggest listening to Peter Attia, Rhonda Patrick, What I’ve Learned (YouTube channel), and Dr Pradip Jamnadas. You’ll get enough info from them on the modern American diet to know that we are 100% killing ourselves.

We eat a lot and don't move around a lot.

They don't eat as much and move around more.

Life expectancy charts comparing countries can be misleading. Denmark has 5.7 people and is mostly homogenous, while have 331.9 million people and are far from it. The fact we're only two years off of their life expectancy is a testament to the healthcare system in this country, if anything, given our shitty diet, lack of exercise, and preference for sugary, processed foods.

America is all about the cheapest for the most. We are gluttons who want to overeat for the lowest price. This is why we have "Mexican Coke" for instance. Really we just have American Coke here, because high fructose cornsyrup is cheap and super sweet. For some reason we need that in all of our soft drinks here, while everywhere else they use regular sugar.

It's a shame really. The amount of natural food available in other countries at reasonable prices is astounding when comparing to our high in cheap sweeteners and preservatives we have here, and what's really disturbing is that we pay a lot for these cheap products now anyway. We are slaves to our gluttony.

For one, we are not 2 years of life expectancy behind the Swiss, we’re 5

For two, while we do eat too much and move too little, that is not our only problem. As the OP identified, WHAT we are eating is also vastly different. We can’t force people to eat less or to move more, but we can sure as shite force Heinz to levelize the ingredients for ketchup sold in the US with ketchup sold in Switzerland… hint, ours has about twice as many ingredients (and I’d venture a guess that not a single one of them are in there to make it healthier for you)

Its not just quantity. The shite in our food here isn't just unhealthy...it's deadly.

Two reasons

1) the shite we sell as “food” in the US cannot be sold in other countries.

2) the health care system is so full of waste and abuse. Insurance costs are outrageous.

Corporate Profits above all else. That’s ultimately where we are as a country

I meant Denmark, not Switzerland. My apologies.

I saw a rather terrifying video clip of a doctor responding the motto “live fast, die young.” He explained how that saying doesn’t really apply any more because modern medicine can keep almost anyone alive. If you go to the doctor at least once a year for a checkup or report any abnormalities in a timely manner, they’ll catch problems before they kill you. Even heart disease, cancers, diabetes: doctors can keep people alive for a long time.

But just because you’re drugged up or surgically repaired, it doesn’t mean that you have your mobility or cognitive abilities or overall health. You’re alive, but you’re a burden to your family and a drain to society.

After that video, and after listening to Peter Attia, lifespan doesn’t mean much to me. We might be two years off of some higher quality European country, but I’m curious about quantifying healthspan. Who has people active and mobile into their 70s and 80s? Who has their elderly functioning with a positive disposition? Who is more likely to feel like life is painful and over by 60?

Give me longevity with healthspan. It’s what really matters. And Americans are mostly struggling in that regard.

The US basically has the same population as all of those countries combined. Terrible comparison

This is true too.

A bag of saline can cost hundreds if you ever are fortunate enough to get a hospital bill. Ibuprofen can cost $20/pill. For fricking ibuprofen!

Why does higher population have to correlate with worse health?

Food quality is the problem, not activity level.

It all started with the sham 7 Country Study by Ancel Keys an continued through the USDA pushing bad science to push products. Throw in a food industry that just wants to push cheap shite for profits and a Pharma industry that just wants you to take their pills for life and here we are.

Seed oils, HFCS and cheap grains are the core of the processed foods that lead to this. Eat "real food" and you will be as healthy as you can be. Stay on the perimeter of the grocery store. The food you should be eating doesn't have a shelf life of month/years.

They are finally admitting artificial sweeteners cause cancer. Most of us knew the shite was bad for us the entire time. But they greased the right palms for a few decades.

Our corrupt government needs to be deported to Mars.

Yeah.

Sucralose was actually discovered while trying to create a new insecticide.

Who could have foreseen negative health effects?
