Ain't that the fricking truth!!!!!
A semi-monthly meeting to see schedule, cost reports, P&L reports, etc., are fine, BUT a fricking conference call takes people away from way more valuable tasks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT, our latest and greatest snake-oil peddling "consultant" says we need them, so we fricking do them.
Been in this game 35 years.....this consultant will rebrand and repackage his schtick in a year, and say that we DON'T need conference calls, and the owners will snidely remark that they don't know WHY we ever did them to start with.
Because you made us, you pompous frick.

Our expertise center gurus scheduled a very important call when 3 or 4 of us were off. (We have every other Friday off). Since it was to address a pretty severe issue we all called in from our homes. One of these upper level clowns tried to use the video capabilities because he wanted to put a face to the names. Most of us have our cameras covered. I went ahead and moved the tape over mine but angled the laptop so all he could see was my lab looking at him. He wasn’t too amused but my boss was laughing the whole time. Next time maybe they’ll check schedules before sending the meeting Webex invites.

My old was boss was a serious micro-manager. One day he took a vacation day to duck hunt. We had a conference call at 830am on a Friday, and sure enough he tried to sneak on the call while in the blind but forgot to mute his speaker

I love WebEx
“Chilly, we put a webex on for the remote guys. You can come to conference room 101 and join us in person if you want”
“No, thanks”

I’ve heard a couple of “I love you”s to spouses/kids from folks working remotely. Nothing wild though.
I’m pretty sure I failed to mute my line once when I went downstairs to the kitchen for coffee. People probably heard a lot of clinking around but no one said anything.
And YES people, put a sticky note or electrical tape over the camera. I was on a WebEx when suddenly all the cameras went live (which shouldn’t happen per IT policy). It was just me my boss, a couple of folks from accounting and operations but that could have been weird if it had been a remote day for me

Most of the customer or team I deal with are on the other side of the planet so it’s always awkward when one of them asks to go put their kid to bed and it’s 8am here

"Hi, who just joined?" drives me crazy

Hahaha that happened today often.
Followed by silence.
Which is always entertaining

We'll occasionally have emergency conference calls in the middle of the night. We've had several people fall asleep on the call and start snoring. I've done it once before too

Most of our DevOps guys (and gals) are in India. The greetings are difficult sometimes. “Good morn...er, after noon...um evening? Ah geez forgot it....how’s it going Ganesh?”

FML
DevOps
DevOps can kiss my arse. They have literally been the reason why Nokia released three Customer Service Labs on a whim and dream that they could automate end to end communications.
Anything that goes to India always gets sent back along with pissed off customers
Edit: that deserves a whole thread to itself. But half the OT wouldn’t understand what DevOps actually meant or does.

Yeah I’ve heard some horror stories. Our guys are problably way more rigid than they need to be but they’re professional. We might just be lucky. UAT is a lot better and production releases don’t have to get rolled back as frequently as they used to.

Nah one of our many middle managers drinking the kool aid and trying to push points to get a promotion by reducing Capex

I hand these out to my team at the end of every conference call and meeting.

When I was trading securities we had a meeting about an upcoming meeting with the head trader.

I’ve had conference calls off and on all day today. Total waste of fricking time

WebEx's make me paranoid as hell. I'm constantly worried the webcam is streaming even though I have it covered up. I double check every few minutes making sure its not live.
My irrational fear stems from the time a coworker pulled a trifecta on a webex. Guy didn't realize the camera was on. He was in a tshirt and his underwear on the couch. His kid was being loud and he told her to shutup. Then the wife comes in and tells the guy to quit being a "Dickhead" and they argue back in forth for a little bit.
I think around 150 people in the org heard and saw the whole thing.

We have weekly forecasting calls that of course could just be handled in email; but then we'd never get to hear for the umpteenth time that we should *insert corporate jingoist term here*.
A couple of weeks ago, I was headed out to see one of our biggest customers and took the call while I was driving. About 20 minutes in, I get pulled over by a State Trooper for expired tags. Now, our fleet vehicles tags are handled at the home office in Michigan and I'd been calling and emailing the corporate car office repeatedly for 3 months to get a new registration. While the call is on-going I explain to the Trooper the situation and as he returned with my ticket, they start calling my name to provide a forecast which he hears over the bluetooth. I just ignored it and started to sign my ticket but about then my manager starts going manic about me not being on the call (he's a tool) and it becomes so distracting I reach over to the phone to hang up.
Like a total bro, the Trooper laughs and asks me to hand him my phone. He then unmuted it and proceeded to inform everyone that he's forecasting about a $210 dollar fine and that someone needs to get me my new registration.

Yes I know, it's tracked by IP Address,
Do you get monitored for doing things like this on your work computer?
One time I googled how to spell "assess" and put in "asses" and all this porn stuff came up. Ha. I IM'd my bud in the IT help desk and he said I was good unless I pressed one of the links.
