You can't look at it so narrowly. Why are people under 60 surviving? Many are because hospitals are forced to make a choice on who gets put on a ventilator.

We also don't know how many people there are dying of other stuff....because there isn't the critical care available that could have otherwise saved their life.

All we see are how many people in Italy die from COVID-19

Using anecdotal cases to say this is more deadly is fear mongering.

Everyone has some risk of dying from this. It seems the younger you are the risk is almost nil. ALMOST.

Absolutely

Healthy 39 year olds die of the flu every year. It’s tragic and extremely rare, and is still reported in local papers/media, but it doesn’t mean you have to worry if you are 39

Hope you are holding up OK...I know you are in a stressful position now. Just wanted you to know I am rooting for you.

I just came back from outdoor funeral services for a family member. It was weird, because they limited the amount of people there and urged people not to come. In addition a friend of the family suddenly died and there will be no services. It's like it never happened other than dropping a card in the mail. And finally, my first cousin's 2 year old in DC died of pneumonia and barely anybody in the family is attending. It's been a sad week.

Thank you. It is stressful...but I'm not doing actual patient care. I just want the staff at my hospital to know that I'm rooting for them.

I'm off till Wednesday (i took off months ago for my bday on Tues) so will get some much needed time to relax. Can't go anywhere for my bday but will go outside for a solo hike. Won't be at work so that is a good thing.

When I left Friday we were only reusing N95s for patients that have TB or TB rule outs. Patients that are suspect/confirmed COVID-19 and require airborne isolation/negative pressure rooms (due to them having aerosolizing treatments/procedures)...staff have been instructed to NOT reuse masks.

We still have staff use gown, gloves, regular mask and eye protection for suspected/confirmed COVID cases that are not receiving aerosolizing treatments/procedures.

Because it's like talking about a YMCA pickup game while the NBA Finals is on.

The everyday flu doesn't overwhelm an entire medical system the way Covid-19 has, in multiple cities and countries.

We are being more lax in who we place on isolation in the hospital though to help conserve PPE.

We used to isolate those with histories of certain MDROs(multi drug resistant organisms for those not in healthcare). Say they were colonized with MRSA...we would place in contact isolation and not take them out until they had completed a 5 day decolonization protocol and had a negative reswab 48 hours after decolonization.

Now...we only isolate those with active MRSA infections. Meaning...they have a culture positive for MRSA and not the nasal swab that just shows they are colonized with it.

Hopefully that will help conserve our supply. We will go back to our more stringent isolation measures later on in the future.

We know.

It wasn't a direct comparison to the flu as a whole, just a statement that young, "healthy" people also die from the flu in outlier cases.

Just like this seems to be in regards to COVID.

One “good” thing from all of this is that hopefully young liberals will recognize how much better our healthcare system is compared to the rest of the world, particularly those with government run healthcare systems.

You mean the same healthcare system that has many of their staff now wearing homemade masks as a flimsy attempt to protect themselves because there isn't enough supply of basic items (that don't even cost much) for them to use??

That healthcare system?

Might want to wait a couple months before making any pronouncements. It hasn't fully hit here yet.

And look at what healthcare workers are already having to do now in regards to protecting themselves.

And it hasn't fully hit yet.

Before this I would never be telling staff to reuse certain PPE like I am now. I would have said "this stuff is cheap and we have plenty of it, healthcare workers are not cheap and we don't have plenty of you...protect yourself properly".

I'd be out of a job if the government took over healthcare, so I agree with the sentiment.

But the surge of patients is just about to start. It might get ugly, don't jinx us.

I had a relative sent home from the ER in a state of delirium a few weeks ago because her private insurance said she didnt meet the criteria for admission. A few hours later she was back, in worse shape, and finally did get admitted. What should have been an overnight stay turned into 5 much more expensive nights. Tell me how bad socialized medicine is and I'll agree with you. But I can also cite chapter and verse on how shitty our system is.

To be fair, easily fixable medical supply problems are not really on the same level as things like rationing care or cut off ages for specific diseases or 6 month waiting periods for routine surgery . I’m not minimizing your problem, as I just had an ER doctor telling me how bad the mask problem is earlier at a funeral, just saying it was a stupid mistake in the system that can easily be corrected.

Respek. Stay safe.

I'm sure hospitals were running multiple Lean processes with just in time delivery to improve efficiency and save money. So, having huge stockpiles of PPE on hand is not a good indicator of the quality of a healthcare system.
