Saw that but the reporting is that there were 3 suspected NoVa cases, 2 they've cleared and 1 that seems to be a likely confirmation coming in a day or two (test pending). The GM kid appears to be included in the 3 per other media articles - so he's either cleared or the pending guy.

But the WUSA9 report that he's refusing to see a doctor seems odd if they've got a pending-results CDC test. I guess it's possible he submitted to the test but won't go to a hospital/formal isolation - but it's a weird way for them to report it.

So I'm curious. what do you all feel caused this thing. Many speculations, but would like to hear a majority of what everyone thinks.

Also, a question. If this came from an animal? Wouldn't that mean other animals would have it as well? Also, what causes the jump from animals to humans in this situation? Dont know much about those things I've seen.

We don’t really know much specifically about this virus yet.

And speaking in general background terms would take a book.

So the super short version:

It appears to be a recombinant strain of different coronaviruses. One infects bats, another infects an unknown animal (potentially snakes). Both animals were ...um....served at the market of the initial outbreak.

They might have mixed in an animal and then jumped to humans...there might have been a disgusting butcher that harbored both strains and they infected the same cells inside of him.

No one knows. No one can know really. Typically a species jump is associated with receptor proteins on the virus tweaking in a way that’s compatible in a new species.

Thanks for the info. It is a lot to think about. Just curious.

Knowing the answer to that's above my pay grade, but I suspect there would be fairly high costs from anything more than a brief embargo, and not necessarily only financial costs. Just considering the field of information technology, we rely on a steady flow of Chinese material and human capital.

I'm going to look stupid but can someone explain to me what different generation cases mean? I saw a post saying that China reported to the WHO on fourth generation cases in Wuhan and 2nd generation cases outside of Wuhan.

Wasn't two days ago where they said the market was not the source?

Are there any confirmed human to human cases yet?

I know the Dad/Son in Nam is speculated to be, but could also be the father bringing infected food with him from Wuhan.

Haven’t heard of any other P2P

Pretty sure that means catching the infection from someone who was not the original source.

There's a confirmed case in Germany, but they gave no details how the man got it or if he traveled somewhere.

An outbreak starts with a single individual, Patient zero or the index case. They might not be the first person who has ever been infected, but they are the first documented in the epidemiological investigation.

The ones he infects are the second generation. The ones they infect are the third generation, and so on.

There is nothing you can presume temporally from which generation there are. For instance, if I infect person A, they present and then infect person C, and AFTER that I’m still a sick frick and infect Person D, person A and D share a generation even though D came after a later generation.

It is used as a way to keep track of the jumps in investigations, as well as following stages of expected epidemiological behavior.

In your stated example (4th gen), it’s a case where Wuhan Patent Zero infected someone else who infected someone else who infected someone else.

For 2nd generation cases outside Wuhan, the people spurring out cause outbreaks of their own, becoming essentially Index Patients in their community. Those they infect are second generation in THAT outbreak.

Put in super layman’s terms, the presence of 4th generation cases in one community indicates an uncontainable breakout.

2nd generation in a another community means person to person transmission has started.

As of right now, the US has no 2nd generation cases. Every case has direct connection to Wuhan.

CDC and WHO are reporting human to human infections are occurring in China. None outside yet, other than Vietnam, but it's expected to happen.

Buddy of mine was in China but is in Taiwan now. He told a coworker of ours that the deaths are around 1,000.

No doubt, but wondering exactly how contagious it is. Completely different standard from social interaction in the US and Asian countries.

I mean, I was on the subway in HK multiple times and then on a few different flights over there. How long do I have to live?

They're still of the opinion it's transported in droplets. Wash your hands, don't let people sneeze in your mouth, and you'll be fine.
