Why does Dr. Fauci keep saying stock up on bottled water when asked about what to really gather for the pandemic? Am I missing something? I know he’s advised six presidents and is about the only one on the task force worth listening to, but I’m not getting his point on the bottled water? Is there that much crap water in the US? Are we going to run out? Does he know something I don’t know? Kumbaya

Considering water is the main thing you need to live I would think it's the smartest thing to stock up on if somehow the supply or electricity gets cut, or this thing somehow enters the water supply ?

Anybody know why “lifelong smoker” hasn’t been analyzed as its own risk category yet?
Maybe not enough data on medical histories to put a good number?
Smoking increases the risk of complications with just about everything to some degree.

How do you get out of bed every morning with all that panic?
Posted on 3/13/20 at 7:21 am to UnluckyTiger
He's not panicking, he's just the board's biggest sheep. If the herd here is trending one way, which right now is overreaction, he'll trend that way too.
Followed with zero original thought and plenty of "you're right dude" and "great post bro" left and right.

Watching/Listening to the media talk about the coronavirus is frustrating. Not that there haven't been good points at times and I'm sure various responses etc. could have been better.
But the most recent talking point about ventilator availability is a little maddening. Even if we don't have enough ventilators for a pandemic, I'm not sure what the talking heads solution is other than just trying to berate admin and officials on the issue is. We can't just magically manufacture more ventilators during a global crisis and certainly can't borrow them from anywhere.
And the coronavirus isn't the only disease or issue out there. People are still become sick from pneumonia, trauma patients, etc. etc. All this does is drive more hysteria...

The highest Internet message board virtue is WARY CYNICISM. It really doesn’t matter what we are discussing, that is the Alpha Male position. And nobody wants to feel like a dupe, or be a dupe.
With Katrina, with the Trump election, with so many sports issues, a consensus builds on this board . People rally around that consensus and it becomes conventional wisdom. And this combines with the natural tendency that some people have to think “ it hasn’t happened yet, it’s not going to happen “.
But if you are a student of history you know one day it’s a beautiful sunny September 10 in NYC and the next day the world looks entirely different. We also know that viruses have culled the human herd for the entire history of mankind. But we have this kind of cynical approach to the idea that this could kill friends and family because we somehow think we are past this. We subconsciously think we are so affluent and technologically advanced that we are now above the idea of a plague or Spanish flu.
It’s been interesting as a student of human nature to watch the wary cynics battle the alarmists. Historically both schools are correct, both outcomes happen. Absolute catastrophes and absolutely nothing. The storm may Peter out ten times in a row and then Katrina happens and the world looks entirely different. And we are always completely shocked when that thing that has happened since time began, happens again. It’s just basic human psychology and it will never change.

Yep. People bitch bitch bitch about the cost of healthcare and then wonder why we don't have an oversupply of ventilators just laying around waiting for a pandemic.

Very interesting take
I’m really tired of all the uneducated hillbillies in my north la town telling people how stupid they are for doing anything to help with containment. I guess this explains it

Almost everyone knows someone with a Cpap machine that they don’t use. In a pinch, you can use that to stay alive.

I’ve only been following this thread for about a week, but this is one of the best posts I’ve seen so far.
The bottom line is: cynics and alarmists have the exact same level of control over the situation: zero. Getting in internet arguments over what the virus will or won’t do basically comes down to people trying to retain a sense of internal control.
I have no idea how bad this thing will get. I’ve seen people far smarter and more educated than me predicting a wide variety of outcomes. The only thing that seems certain is that this will get worse before it gets better and it will have a real impact for at least a couple of months.
I know we’ll get through it and I’m also aware that I have very little control over whether or not I’ll get sick. I’m also 25 and (basically) healthy, so I know getting the virus *likely* wont mean much for me.
Just praying for people at risk and hoping to see a return to normalcy...sometime

Containment and no huge group outings are one thing. People afraid to leave their houses and the crushing effects on local businesses are another thing entirely. The media should promote caution and common sense but not shear panic which ends up being more destructive than the event itself. It’s pretty stunning (although human nature at some point) that we have had a run on toilet paper of all things.

I guess the good news about trauma patients is that should go down a bit with less people driving like assholes on the roads.

I haven’t seen any media coverage of it to judge
I guess I can see people trying to downplay it for that reason
