I have to lock myself inside for 14 days? My whole family? I’ve got 3 trips this year. California, Boston and Florida. Cancel them all right? My sons school should be closed I suppose. Who watches him? A daycare? Forcing people to stay away from other people to what extent. Why don’t we just shut down everything and everyone stay home for a month right? I’m trying to figure out what the threshold is for y’all.
No one knows the threshold, because no one knows the impact. Period. Reasonable people can see it slightly differently, but you going all nuts is not necessary.

It would be like sending the govt 5 extra bucks one time. And yes, I would be ok with that.

These folks that have issues are needing long arse stays in ICU.
It's not even just that. Every hospital in Italy has had to create a separate "coronavirus ICU," because you can't put these patients in a regular ICU, because they'd just infect everyone else in the unit. Also, caring for these patients requires full protective gear that's extremely uncomfortable -- doctors and nurses get drenched in sweat after a few hours.

Our ICU is 85-100% full at any given time without any extraneous factors such as a novel virus.
Not sure how many ICU beds they have at the hospital my wife is employed. But it is very rare for them to have more than 1 bed open at any given time as it stands. So any influx of ICU patients is going to be a challenge.

Exactly. That was retarded.
I’d actually love to go there right now.

It seems like half the cases in large swaths of the country are idiots who went on a Nile cruise in Egypt.
Where is this coming from? Egypt only has 59 confirmed cases so far.

I’m fine I’m just trying to see where you stand. What’s okay with you and what’s not and why? It’s a simple question. Why did no one react this way to H1N1?

It is going to be fun to revisit this thread at the end of June. I have no idea how this will play out. Will the US have 500k deaths, or will the figure be less than 500?
I desperately hope, as do many others, that this is a seasonal virus that fades away as temperatures warm up -- like the flu does.
There's a lot of circumstantial evidence for that, and some theory too. There should've been big outbreaks by now in Southeast Asia. Jakarta, Indonesia, for example had a regular nonstop flight to Wuhan during their epidemic. The lack of those outbreaks is just correlation, not proof, but I think that there is reason to hope that warmer temps will help us, especially here in the South, to keep this virus under control, and that we'll be able to avoid the kinds of situations that Italy is facing.

They’re reasonable today apparently but they weren’t needed any other time Something like this happened? Why? Because it’s more deadly for the 80+ crowd?
It's probably a combination of both an elevated cCFR rate and elevated transmission rate.
MERS and SARS had much higher cCFRs at 34% and 10% respectfully but MERS also had much lower transmission rates that most viruses meaning that it died out much more quickly.
COVID and Influenza have similar transmission rates but COVID has a much higher cCFR rate (estimated between 3-4% compared to the flu at around .01%)
I'm neither a virologist or a doctor so maybe Scruffy or someone else can speak more knowledgeably about this. But, as I understand it, when you deal with novel viruses, it is like you are looking at a rolling wave - infection rates will rise and then fall pretty quickly. The main issue is to try and keep the peak of the wave from overloading the medical systems because that is where you run into significant problems.

If my sister got coronavirus, shuttling sown her work, her kids schools, my work, my wife’s work, anyone’s spouses from my work/my sisters work/my wife’s work etc etc is actually more “reasonable” than shutting down random concerts and events
But you see how crazy that sounds?

It's funny how people are bitching about taking any kind of minor steps prevent the spread of this also think our healthcare system is invincible and can handle this easily. They know nothing about ICUs in general and think we've got unlimited capabilities to handle anything that comes this way.
