Other than the number of people on this planet, the facts aren’t really clear at this point. So there will be some debate.

I think there’s some things we can say with reasonable certainty:

The mortality rate will be higher than the seasonal flu but not more than 2%.
Americans will die but it won’t be millions.
It’s mainly killing elderly people.
Nobody has a clue to the extent of spread in the United States.

I don’t know whether this is a good or bad thing yet. Based on the CDC testing standards at the moment, this thing has to be spreading like wildfire and a majority of people think they just have a cold or the flu. SK numbers are so high because they are testing practically everyone.

It feels like the management of this is being completely botched by all our leaders. shite will start hitting the fan if deaths start piling up.

So will the brain trust here give me a ballpark figure on how many Americans will die from this?

I'd move to Madagascar if I were you, but they probably already close down ports and flights so they will make it.

What would you do differently?

I have only a couple of complaints so far. One is that the CDC has seriously lagged in their ability to test. They need enough capacity to allow clinicians in the field to test when they think it's appropriate. I'm not sure why that happened, but it has set us back in establishing a baseline prevalence of the disease. I also think that the CDC should have only one spokesperson to relay their official message to the public, which might help prevent this from turning into a political circus. It might also help it both political sides would agree to depoliticize this, but that's definitely a bridge too far.

It’s not clear to me what the situation is with the effectiveness of the test kits that are out there, but I’d definitely be less restrictive than they are being with who to test (this assumes an accurate kit is available to all states). I wouldn’t be surprised if this thing is all over the country by early next week given the testing restrictions.

My biggest gripe has been the political handling of it by both sides. Neither side genuinely cares about Americans lives. They are simply handling it with November in mind, and I find that infuriating.

This is nothing new in the history of this country or any other. The pursuit of power is the most vicious sport and consideration of the people is not a factor. That's why people should always work to limit the powers of their government. Sooner or later a powerful government will destroy their freedoms.

Without adequate and widespread testing we won’t know where the next big outbreak will occur. This leads to out of control situations that overwhelm the system.

See Iran and Italy, why do you think overnight they seemingly exploded with cases and deaths? Because it was brewing there for a long time and reached a critical point when they weren’t testing. Now we can obviously handle things better than them but we need to know where to focus our resources.

BNO: 594 new cases in South Korea in today’s 1st update; number higher than both of yesterday’s updates combined.

They usually do 2 updates so likely over 1,000 new cases today. Their hospitals are maxed out. We will learn a lot from how South Korea handles this and what move they make next.

I like my chances in a town of less than 5,000 in SE Louisiana, the only real time I’m interacting with people I don’t know a lot about is at the gym. Hand sanitizer as soon as I go in, multiple times while I’m there and before I leave and never put your hands by your face or mouth in a gym setting.

FDA has made a series of moves that will allow for more labs to begin testing. It is estimated that the US capacity could be has high as 10,000 test a day in the next 7 - 10 days.
