The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District has notified us that a Baylor student recently in China is being tested for a possible case of coronavirus.

Public health officials say the immediate health risk to the BU campus community is low.

Here we go. First international case of human to human.

WHO:
quote:

One confirmed case in Vietnam had no travel history to any part of China but was a family member
of a confirmed case who visited Wuhan. This suggests an instance of human to human
transmission that occurred in Vietnam.

Chinese state media confirmed on Friday that the coronavirus, spreading from the city of Wuhan, has now infected 29 of China’s 31 provinces, a concession critics will likely take as confirmation that the Chinese government has not been honest about how rapidly the disease is spreading.

If China's state media is confirming 29 of 31 of their provinces have the virus then it has to be far beyond the 800 official cases they have stated. It would at a minimum be in the thousands and likely more.

Tens of thousands had this and traveled before knowing it. That's the scary thing if you look at the original suspected date.

If the incubation period really is as long as reported, then this is almost exactly the time we’d expect widespread contagion

Just simple math but if only 900 out of the 11 million people in that one city have the virus the ratio would be 1 per 12k.

The fact that 3 Americans have already been confirmed means there would have to be 36k Americans traveling home from that one city I’ve never heard of. That seems ridiculous.

Much more likely that 10s or 100s of thousands of Chinese infected.

Do we know that it is 3 Americans? I assumed they are likely foreign exchange students.

Not sure but i think his math is the same in either case. Basically we have no idea how bad this is becuase what the China gov says doesn't line up with what the China gov is doing.

If it started back in December wouldn't it be more prevalent in several countries by now?
An estimate week long incubation period and probably plenty of symptomatic, undiagnosed cases. I'm sure it is much more prevalent than the reported numbers.

Not shocking at all. You know of plenty of posters have that kind of mentality. Especially on that one certain board.

I've been watching some Ken Burns docs about Jefferson, The Congress, etc... Listening to them speak what to them was plain english sounds like great poetry now. It's exhausting to talk that way but dammit their command of the english language was far superior to the even educated people's today.
