cost of basic necessities has grossly outpaced income increases

Yeah, you almost get it but unfortunately you don't seem to understand that what constitutes "basic necessities" has become conflated with luxury goods and entertainment expenses. The avergage younger Millennial and Gen Z'er doesn't have even the slightest concept of what differentiates "needs" from "wants".

Young couple that bought one of my houses was early to mid 20's. Definitely a blue collar baw too.

They actually do. They just don’t feel they should have to sacrifice any of their wants.

If a guy 20 years older than them lived in a dump for 5 years to save up for a house, they just see the house and want it. The living in a dump part is beneath them.

So, because it's more difficult now Gen Z shouldn't even try? Is that your stance?

That sounds an awful lot like justification for excusing undisciplined, impulsive spending habits.

FTR, both of my sons (35 & 32) own their own houses.

Break in down for us then gramps

Let’s start with the easy stuff

Cell phone
Internet
A tv
Netflix (remember this has hundreds of thousands of hours of content and costs less than a happy meal per month)

Justification - that's what you took from that? People sucking with money isn't a new phenomenon.

I live comfortably, and I spend very little on everyday expenses people making way less don't think twice about. I'm not commenting from a position of despair.

Life still isn't particularly financially difficult if you aren't an idiot, but cutting out every "luxury" item isn't a magic bullet. We can still acknowledge things Americans have viewed as basic necessities for generations have begun to cost more relative to income than they once did.

So true! If you skip spending $5 a day on coffee and instead invest that into the stock market at a 10% return, it would only take you 20 years to afford the down payment on the median New York home. Gen Z is just stupid!

And for anywhere in nyc that’s Starbucks, uber, and cutting eating out for like 20 years with no surprises or medical issues or…

The idea that as younger people you can have the same spending habits as a boomer is an indication of your twisted expectations in life.

The absurd part is that the older people who can actually afford the frivolous things generally don’t spend the money on them nearly to the extent as the ones who can’t.

Yes she is. Young people aren’t getting married and having kids anyway. Why do you need a house?

What’s hilarious is it doesn’t even register with you that you are reinforcing the other side’s position

What side would that be?

The side that thinks you should be living the same lifestyle as your parents (but with higher discretionary spending) at 25?

Also:

tOT: We are fricked as a society because smart/successful native born americans are not reproducing at even a quarter of the levels we need. We NEED to get back to 3 and 4+ kid households.

Also tOT: You’re an entitled, spoiled brat if your expectation is to own a home in your late 20s/early 30s. Spend your time working and staying in. Irresponsible to go out to eat or meet friends for drinks once a week.

I'm not saying these services aren't necessary, it's just they're were not as many things to spend money on. We watched TV through a rabbit ear antenna for free because there was no cable.

Even when my wife and I both worked we infrequently went out to eat, we couldn't afford to because we were saving for a house.

Today there are consumer products competing for every disposable dollar, there were no $1400 smokers, all the electronics. I helped out a lady with a baby who was short at the grocery cashier, it was only about $10, but I'll bet she had thousands in ink on her sleeves and legs.

If you don't think there is a lot of stupid spending by people who complain they can't afford a house, you need to open your eyes.
