So when you guys tell your friends you make $150k a year y'all count OT and per diem? GTFO with that. When someone tell me they make $150k I am assuming $150k/2080(normal working calendar)
in industrial construction, working 5 10s IS your normal calendar. that is the schedule that 90% of jobs are bid on, it's hard to get hands to come to work for anything less.

Agreed. As a CM with a major oil and gas company in New York with 16 years of experience, an MBA and a PMP I am calling bullshite on the inflated numbers people are claiming in here
sounds like your market is totally different up there and you need to go work for a contractor instead.

In fact, you can probably get paid more as a project controls manager, rather than a construction manager.
yeah, things are totally different up there

OP, buddy hit me up this morning looking for planner/schedulers at $75/hr with $110 per diem working 6-10s in Illinois, SoCal, and Utah. Go take some P6 classes and watch some youtube vids about industrial construction You can go do that for a year and then take a year off

You are being screwed.
Yes

You should be over 100k by now easily.
Not if your primary role is estimating, unless of course you are the head of estimating, but at 7 years experience not likely.

Not a bad guess.
What year did you graduate lsu in cm? Im thinking we may have graduated around the same time. Espcially if you work for the main electrical contractor out there.

Exactly. I LOL at people when they tell me they make $100K a year and then in the next breath say they work 80 hours a week.
They don’t have a $100k a year job, they have two $50K a year jobs and are too dumb to realize the difference.

Ya’ll do realize the O&G industrial construction is one of the highest paying fields in construction right? Few things above it, like probably Nuclear energy plant construction lol.
Point being, using that as any kind of average benchmark is ludicrous. Most guys can’t expect that pay.
If your company pays you per diem and you live full time locally, that’s dumb on your company. I understand why they are doing it, but you need to darn well understand also and that it’s not going to be like that long term on average. You will be the same guys on here bitching when your next job you are laid off or headed to bumfrickistan or Canada.
I just think it’s unfair to tell some guy that works for a small shop locally that his pay sucks when you work for one of the better jobs in the company.

I'm not saying I don't get paid fairly, I'm saying all of these 150K + jobs that everyone claims to have are few and far between. If people are claiming it, they are usually adding a bunch of BS like per diem and overtime to inflate their number.

I understand that, but you have to consider the geography of most people on this site and know that you will have a lot of industrial guys chiming in with their experiences. i told him in my 1st post to switch to industrial lol, that's the move if he wants to make lots more money. would be a big learning curve and take a couple of years to get up to speed, but anyone can do it if they're somewhat intelligent and work hard

removing any sort of bias, OP is still getting hosed with the no benefits deal. that sucks

Damn son they might as well pay you minimum wage with that

Rowbear and I work together. The jobs he describes are like hitting the lottery. They are not sustainable as they are quite literally contract jobs. The base may stay the same from job to job but per diem, OT, distance, living location, etc will change.
I will say that the ones doing better than industrial construction managers and engineers, are RV park and bar owners near job sites.

I didn't say it was sustainable, but my point still is, OP needs to find a new job. The 23-year-old CM grad, let's call him "Joe", made the numbers I mentioned his first full year out of college. It's few and far between but still some, as mentioned previously, have grossed that straight out of college.

Your base salary is $10,000 more then his. Add in no benefits and certainly he is being underpaid $20-30,000 a year if not more. That’s not a little amount of money, but some small town mom and pop compared to rare industrial job that is pretty accurate difference in pay.

A few years back. I work for the EPC contractor. The main electrical is one of our sub contractors.

So you are including $63k in per diem that a guy is pocketing because he drives an hour and a half each way to Luling as salary... Ok

Never once did I say per diem was salary. I said when you add up salary, OT and per diem, it adds up the figures mentioned.

I am an LSU CM grad with 23 years in industrial construction. The degree is what you make of it and what makes you happy. If you are happy working for a smaller firm and doing the job you love, you have to live with the lower pay scale and little to no benefits.
Yes, industrial construction pays more and offers better benefits but pack your bags. You can work close to home for a while (I worked the river corridor for 10 years EPC and slept in my bed) but if you want to advance (Senior or Executive Management or Owner/Operator), you will travel or move in your career. I currently work for a major oil company in Texas and the pay scale + benefits is exponentially better than most and especially contractors. Buuuutt….I have moved twice and have travelled extensively. I now travel a week a month and its the least I have travelled in 10 years.
Yes, at your experience level you can make more money and have better benefits but you need to weigh the intangibles first. All that said, it never hurts to look around and weigh your options. Might even help leverage your current situation.
