Before Facebook, elderly conservative people used to spread these email chains. For example, there was one that said Democrats were letting the Chinese build air force bases on American soil. My grandparents and dad would believe them and get really paranoid.

remember my dad saying his friend in the 80’s had a device on his brand new car that increased his gas mileage 10 fold. When he brought it to the dealer they quickly whisked it around back. When he got it back the device had been removed, and the car got its normal crappy gas mileage. Looking back that was bullshite, but back then we believed it.
This isn't a conspiracy theory. This is just you and your dad being absolute dumbasses.

All I know is that I was never offered as many free drugs as the after school specials led me to believe.

Oil filters that were just rolls of TP and lasted 100,000 miles. Technology bought by Penzoil and hidden away in a warehouse next to the Ark of the Covenant.

The giant catfish spotted by underwater welders working at the lock and dam.
I guess that’s more of an urban legend.

as someone who worked for BellSouth back in the day, this was a bigger deal than some thought. a lot of the applications, at that time, were still from the 60's and 70's and never updated or replaced with newer software. when the rollover occurred, there were 2 or 3 systems that didn't work, and took a while to get them updated to work again, but BellSouth spent a ton of money and about 2 years to scramble to get things where they needed to be, or they would have been fricked.
Y2K was vastly overblown as a whole, but there would have been some bad shite if it wasn't taken seriously. ultimately I worked the rollover at Midnight and they paid almost triple pay for it, so I honestly didn't care if things went to shite or not.

Perpetual motion machines, tires that last for 100k miles and never go flat and various gadgets that greatly improve MPG. Supposedly the manufacturers bought the patents so the product didn’t go into production.

knew a guy when I lived in Fl that converted his car to run off of cooking oil, he would take the used oil from the McDonald's fry machine to run his car, you could smell him a mile away
The owner of the McDonald's franchises in Lake Charles did that. They were all diesel vehicles. He was an engineer before going into the fast food biz.

glad to see the countless hours I've spent manning the fry machine have been put to good use

Ah man, I misread the subject as conspiracy theories that CAME to fruition. This is way less fun.

Heard a story when I was a kid about a magical carburetor that somebody had invented. Gave you over 100mpg. Shell bought it for millions just to keep it off the market.
Looking back I can’t believe I was that gullible
People are still convinced that thing exists...
