Spot on. There are tons of 20 somethings with PETE degrees right now. I find a lot of companies seem to be holding on purely because they know they are the future, but really don't have a lot of work for them right now. I can't see them hiring for a little while.
In regards to the PETE degree vs. other degrees, I'd get a ME degree with a minor in geology. Also know a lot of chemical engineers working in the field. If you have great grades and some internships, you are looked at the same as a petroleum grad, and if not, you can do your time at a service company and move over in 5 years or so if that's what you want to do. PETE is just very specific (it's more like a trade school than an engineering degree). They only teach you about one industry. That'd be like breaking off HVAC knowledge from the ME curriculum and making an HVAC engineering degree. There are safer degrees to get and still pursue the same job in my opinion. But that is just my opinion.

I agree completely with this...if getting a job is a priority, I would stick with a more general degree that can translate to a lot of different industries...

I was going back to school for PETE, but after thinking long and hard about the curriculum, I decided ME to give me more options if I didn't want just Oil & Gas jobs.

Depends on the school. Where are you enrolled and are you confident about its ability to give you the requisite training and education needed to help you grow?
I mean, it's not like you're at some awful HBCU, right? Because that wouldn't be good.

I'm an engineer myself (EE) so obviously I have nothing against engineers, but you are pretty foolish to continue wasting your time in school. Get the piece of paper and get out.
You're far into a master's program already and you want to switch? It seems like you're one of these people afraid to apply for jobs so you stall in school as long as possible to maintain this status of being a productive citizen regardless of how much debt it's putting you in.
I'm not saying this is you, but I've seen this plenty of times.
Also, why the hell does anyone go into PETE anything? Do people open up google and look for highest paying bachelor's degree jobs and base their entire decision off of that? I've met very few PETE students who actually care about what they're doing in school. I've interviewed some and they are BY FAR the worst when it comes to personality and passion.

I understand that one should not hold doubts for their passion. And to be fair, I would not trade the experience at SU for anything in the world.
It's just that the PETE jobs do seem attractive. But I know there is more to being a professional than liking a certain job type. It has to be something you invest yourself in.
I feel that my current MS is enough for a good job, the question is... where can I find work. I am strongly considering going for out of state interviews, since ME and Chem E dominate Louisiana.

Staying in school isn't going to make it any easier to find a job. Looking for jobs and applying for them isn't fun, but delaying the inevitable does you no good.
There are plenty of Electrical Engineering jobs here and in Texas. There are also not a lot of electrical engineers here.
