considering getting a master's in PETE

I have a BS in Physics. I am currently pursuing a Masters in Engineering (electronics and materials)
I originally considered getting an advanced degree in Petrol Engineering, but I realized that it was more for my ego than what I truly wanted in life.
However, lately I have some doubts, oil and gas has some interesting jobs. My big concern is the job market.
Any comments or suggestions.

I have seriously considered it. However I would say I'm 70% industry and 30 % research as far as personal interest. If I stay in my current degree, I want to work with electronic am devices, possibly RTD or other sensors.
In Petrol, my interest is mostly in the thermodynamic side of things, though I Lack context with the positions in that industry.

pete is one of he most interesting of he engineering disciplines to me...however, the job market is so cyclical that I could never stand the insecurity....

You blasted the board for two months about getting an EE degree and being in your last semester. Now you're deciding to get a PETE degree at Southern?

I stated that this was hopefully my last year and i will graduate spring 2016.
SU has no PETE program. I'd have to go LSU or ULL.

People are free to correct me, but I'm pretty an ME and even other Engineering disciplines can do everything the PETE does.....and you dont have to study such a narrow curriculum.

You dont need a masters in PETE to get in industry.
I would get a masters if you want to do research rather than application.

Now is not a good time. You're late to the party. If you must go, choose lsu, not ULL. You need to pick a good school.. Lsu, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. this matters a lot.
It will be difficult for you to find a job. No, you probably won't get a research job with a masters like someone said.
It's a really interesting field, but there is a massive bubble of petroleum engineers right now. Everybody and their daddy wanted a Pete degree when PETE started showing up at the top of the list for best paid majors. Now the price of oil crashed, and you have tons of students and very few jobs for them.

This is true. Usually companies will pay the ME a little less than the PETE even if they do the same job, but it gives you many more options. I know people in the oilfield with chem and ME degrees.. If they get laid off, they aren't pigeon holed to the oil industry.
