How are fake guns allowed at a high school band performance each week?

A Bossier school had an scary incident that turned out to be fueled by a fake gun. A local Republican state legislator proposed a bill to ban realistic fake guns in school. The NRA got wind of it and went crazy. Killed the bill, even though they couldn’t really explain why. Slippery slope or something.

A podcast did a piece about it. I’m a life member of the NRA, but they went a little coo coo on this deal.

The Black guy that killed those two trained cops seem to know how to hold a gun. Maybe he didn't go to that High school?

Or maybe the lame Archie Bunker type humor here just isn't funny?

According to Reddit, that's their standard halftime show. It comes from the movie John Q

I’m struggling to understand how they think this is going to be understood by any audience as a depiction of John Q. If I’m remembering correctly, the doctors and nurses are not the ones armed in that story.

Imagine if a white school did this in Jackson following 2 Jackson cops getting shot.

Yahoo Sports put a national article out about this.

LINK

quote:

Jackson Public Schools superintendent Errick L. Greene released a statement Saturday, in part to apologize, and in part to explain the performance:

“On behalf of the Jackson Public School (JPS) District, I want to offer my deep and sincere apologies for the performance by the Forest Hill High School band during Friday’s football half-time show in Brookhaven. Based loosely on the movie, “John Q,” the band’s performance depicted a hostage scene that included toy guns.

JPS has a great deal of respect and appreciation for our law enforcement partners. The band’s performance does not depict the values and people in our community, and was incredibly insensitive to the students, families, law enforcement officials and the entire Brookhaven community. For this we sincerely apologize to all, and we pledge to do better in the future.

We have taken some initial actions in response to this matter, and you have my commitment that we will investigate it fully and take additional appropriate action with respect to procedures and personnel.”

The mayor of Jackson, Miss., Chokwe Lumumba, released a statement as well:

“I offer my sincerest regrets to the Brookhaven community for the insensitivity that portrayed during the Friday evening halftime show. There is an active investigation into the circumstances that led to this performance. While I do not believe that there was a malice intent on behalf of the students that participated in this halftime show, I understand that we are ultimately not defined by the things that we set out to do, but rather how we respond to the things that actually do take place. It is the responsibility of adults to offer guidance to youth. Our students should have been instructed that this was neither the time or place for that performance.”

Mississippi governor Phil Bryant called the performance “unacceptable,” and tweeted that “someone should be held accountable.”

Looks like the band director has absolutely 0 support.

I can see the school this morning too, students running around like a bunch of howler monkeys talkin bout how dey made da news. Wez famous, we in here! You can only imagine. Not having an administration with the intellect to sit them all down and explain why or how the skit had no business in an school sports environment to begin with. Teachers leaning against the awning poles bobbing there heads in agreement with their best little wayne " YEA "......Jackson is a sad place in southern America. I have family there. Its like visiting a different country when we swing over for family events and holidays. Totally government dependent, no acknowledgment of self worth, just a hand out and a voice of 'where is mines"

Ive seen John Q several times. I don't recall any scenes in the movie where there were cops held at gunpoint. Especially in the manner they are suggesting in the picture.

Why is a band doing a tribute to a movie about hostages? What? I'm trying to imagine these conversations when deciding what to do for a halftime show.

I can't find movie on Prime, Netflix, or HBO go. I can't even buy it for download on Youtube. In other words, its hard to find. You have to actually buy the dvd. So some kid came up with this scene from a 16 year old obscure movie?

Nope.

You know damn well that if there was one white person involved in any part of this skit or remotely responsible for it's inclusion, riots would be underway.

frickin' double standards!

I seem to remember him taking the hospital hostage (a cop was involved) with a gun in order to get his son a heart transplant

There were no cops in the ER with any of them. Only a fat security guard(big fat white guy from Remember the Titans). He already had an unloaded gun when he went into the ER.
