I suspect my farming ancestors were able to eat whatever they wanted and burned those calories off easily during the day.

Microwavable meals and the explosion of fast food coincided with movement from blue collar to white collar jobs.

Less movement, more junk food, more leisure time.

I do think I look better now with more muscle mass, but I don't think I looked "aids like" back then either

Nah. Acceptance is the correct term. As a society, we have accepted that being 20-30 lbs overweight is normal. That is fat acceptance.

I can attest to this - I was around 220 a few years ago and nobody blinked and eye - that was technically nearly obese. Now that I'm down in weight I get comments on the regular about being too skinny, even though I'm right dead in the middle of a what a man my height should weigh and my medical stats prove that I'm healthy.

I have a buddy that's 5'10" and weighs probably 200 pounds - lifts are the time - doesn't look bad, but he's on high blood pressure meds amongst many other things. Unless you're playing in the NFL there is absolutely no reason to be carrying around all that weight.

That is a complete load of a bull shite. Chicken and vegetables or rice and beans are way cheaper than eating out

I keep seeing this

Eventually, you are going to want a little variety in your life than just “chicken and veggies”

Yes, some healthy options are cheap. Overall, as someone who cooks at home a lot and eats healthy. It is more expensive and time consuming than packaged unhealthy options

And when you add variety, it’s hard to not waste things the way portions are sold here. In Europe you have fresh markets you can walk to and get single servings daily to cook at home for your variety. In America the grocery is a 10-15 minute drive for a lot of people and you buy in bulk

The setup we have here is not naturally condusive for healthy and easy cooking at home

Yea but it’s fat free ranch and I wash it down with a Diet Coke.

This is a big problem. Majority of the heathy options come with a higher price tag. It’s just cheaper to eat garbage.

I also think it’s mainly snacking and drinking that gets Americans in trouble. You can eat like an absolute slob for your actual meals and be fine from a calories perspective

Let’s to McDonald’s for every meal:

Breakfast: Sausage egg and cheese McMuffin

Lunch :Big Mac and fries

Supper :Quarter pounder and fries

That is 2,190 calories

That is a solid calorie deficit for almost everyone that will have you losing weight.

Maybe in some kind of food desert urban center, but I call b.s. on that for BR. I pass 4 grocery stores just in morning carpool every day. And it's not like "healthy" food just disintegrates in 24 hours. That's what the freezer is for.

The real deal is that people's behaviors are determined by what they want to do and what they'll make time for. Most don't actually care that they're fat, and that's okay. But the million excuses people make get old, quickly.

Average Euros also live in closets with very little for storage.

Fridge space and dry good storage isn’t an issue for a weekly run to the store

Also, maintaining a weight doesn’t mean you can’t pig out from time to time or have to eat the same stuff all the time. Just giving some examples.

It’s hard as shite to eat home cooked meals and be more iunhealthier than eating out or frozen pizzas

I’m not making excuses, I’m giving facts

Yes people are generally lazy, but society has changed and made healthy eating habits more difficult

Just from a time perspective now let’s look at it

Almost all households require dual workers, and in America, that means working 8-5. Throw in taking kids to after school activities, and you are talking getting home at 6 or 7

Adding both spouses to the working world was a huge jet boost to making fresh and healthy eating less attainable

I understand criticizing poor health choices, but do you ever consider how lucky and blessed we are that we have the luxury to make those poor choices? And the means to fulfill them?

I’m not condoning the behavior. But it’s
Like bitching about how wasteful we are and material we can be. We’re lucky we have the luxury to do so.

Sunday afternoon meal prepping is honestly one of my favorite times of the week

turn on some music, pour a drink, and cook all evening

just requires the slightest bit of planning

I hear what you're saying, but it's still a choice. With some meal planning, dinner can be on the table in 30 minutes. It does take forward thinking, but it's completely doable.

I am not saying there aren’t work arounds, but it’s actual “lazy” thinking to simply point and say “humans got lazier” when talking about weight gain

Before dual working families was the norm, making a meal, getting the kids to practice, and household chores could be done by someone who had all day

Now, a man and/or woman is expected to work a full time job, do the child activities, do the cooking, and necessary chores around the house. So maybe people haven’t gotten lazier, but our huge gigantic leap in society where women join the workforce puts a huge stressor into natural human behaviors

It takes far more work now to simply do what was easy and natural for centuries of humans before

100% woman getting the rights to work just like men was the right thing to do. At the same time it has had huge negative outcomes for divorce, health, etc

Both of those things can be truths. We haven’t really adjusted as a society to women working. We just naively assumed we could continue on the same way

Maybe YOU will need to do this.

You can't make that statement about me.

I can easily skip an entire day of eating any food.

I'm amazed at the lack of discipline from folks about being able to control their own lives.

This is what I see when folks can't tell themselves "no":
