The real question is what good will surveillance do for something that large if it is on a collision course?

There will be no extraterrestrial threats to guard against and out government shouldn’t be wasting money to guard against it. The closest there might be is if we discover microbes on Mars or something, bring them back to Earth, and then our bodies can’t defend against it so there’s a pandemic.
There won’t be spaceships zipping around with lasers either. At most some sort of unmanned orbital weapons delivery systems. Every explosion or wrecked satellite causes significant long term problems for development of space. NASA spoke up about India’s destruction of a satellite making the statement that its wholly unsustainable because of the debris it creates.

If you know something is going to hit in ten years you can react. If you know something is going to hit in ten months you can react but it’s harder. If ten days, oh well.
There are ways to prevent collision but we need to be developing the tech now, not at the last minute.

So this thread has spurred talk of the Space Force, asteroids, extraterrestrial life and light years. So if humans save their azzes by deflecting one object, that's great. But a philosophical question: In saving ourselves from these threats, what is your vision of how long humans are going to continue on this planet. Are you thinking 250 years, 2000 years or 2,000,000 years. Man it all changes over time so I doubt humans can be saved in the long run. It's foolish to think we have some sort of control on that. Sorry, that's just how it is. The earth is not here because of humans. We are here because of the earth.

There’s no real answer I can give, who knows. We may nuke ourselves tomorrow. Or the Yellowstone super volcano erupts. But what we can do is work (preferably the global community contributes) to prevent a very real and very dangerous threat from the earth be impacted by an asteroid/comet. That’s one less cataclysmic event to destroy humanity which hopefully helps tack on some years for us.
Ultimately I think man destroys itself, and my guess is within the next thousand years. And yes I do think mankind destroying the habit on which it resides via polluting it and accelerating the aptmospheric change destroys it.

To project what’s in the future, we have to look at the past. The human past includes approximately 4.1 billion years of evolution. Over that period we have evolved from the simplest life form to the most advanced.
We have reached the limits of biological evolution. Humans cannot migrate from earth in our current form. We have colonized the entire planet because we can reshape the environment to suit our needs. We can’t do that in space.
However, the evolutionary gift that has caused us to completely dominate earth will also send our offspring into the Universe. Not our biological offspring, though. Rather, it will be the artificial intelligence we create that will represent us.
We’re already launching rudimentary AI into our solar system on discovery missions. Soon AI will be so advanced that it will design itself for interstellar travel. We will, in effect, create our successor species that will explore the Universe.
Again looking to the past, we can see a slow transition that took 3 billion years for single cell organisms to evolve into multicellular creatures. Then it took hundreds of millions of years for a technological intelligence to evolve, humans.
Now, some three hundred thousand years later, our technological abilities are creating AI. From an objective viewpoint, this is a natural progression of evolution. Biological life is becoming metalogical life, or what we now call artificial intelligence. Only metalogical life can traverse space’s great distances between worlds to continue the spread of intelligence in the Universe.
