You can get a voltmeter for $10.

Make sure you are not getting too much voltage drop at the cable connection due to corrosion, loose connection, Etc.

Let us know if it checks out OK,some GM vehicles actually had the starter/Ignition switch,at the bottom of the steering column, and a rod ran from the key cylinder down to that.

I don't think that the starter circuit will have a fuse.

Glad to see a kid learning to do stuff like this

Make sure all connections are in good shape. You must sand them off. Don't trust eye test. Sand connectors at battery and at solenoid. Bad connections might not be the only problem, but I guarantee there is enough corrosion to block the current. Corroded connectors can still give good Voltage reading.

I'll make sure I sand them off. Grabbing lunch and then headed to autozone to get the starter tested. Will report back.

Appreciate the words of wisdom

That's going to be it, and it's easy to change as you already know. I can't imagine it will be very expensive...at least I hope it wouldn't be for an older vehicle.

Do you live near a Harbor Freight. Here is a coupon for a free one.

Assuming the battery is not defective and is fully charged, you probably have a high resistance connection, possibly the ground strap or corroded battery connectors, that cannot carry the current needed for starting.

It's also possible that your alternator diodes are defective and are either draining the battery or not charging it.

I know there is a cost difference between the good one and the one with the year guarantee. Get the good one.

They test the cheap ones before they leave the store because some do not work when new. You would be lucky to get the year out of it.

Also, when cleaning the terminals, Auto Zone has a cheesy little brush to do it with. It is $2-3 and is worth it. Check the cables close to the terminals as well. They probably have corrosion. It will look like a greenish/white powder if corroded.

Also get some of the little felt pads. They almost stop any corrosion. I don't know why. It is magic or something but they work.

I'd ensure the battery is good....and that it has a good connection. If it does, then I'd suspect the 17 year old starter motor.

If it's the starter.....try to replace it with a good one.

I forgot to add, if your truck is a standard shift, there might be a switch behind the clutch pedal that prevents starting unless the clutch pedal is pushed in.they go bad sometimes. Automatics also have a neutral/Park switch that can get out of adjustment. If that is the case, you might try shifting into neutral and try to start it.

Mechanic of 36 yrs here. I can't see your truck, of course, so we are dealing with probabilities. This not a fuse or Alternator. Clean cable ends(connections) at battery are critical. If they are good-put a starter on it. I would.

Find the solenoid on your truck. Using a PLASTIC HANDLE screwdriver, connect the two posts sticking out of it and get someone to crank it. If it cranks, there's your problem.

Me, too. I probably wouldn't have screwed up so much stuff in the past if I knew the right way to fix something.

If the solenoid is clicking and the starter isn't turning over, it's going to be corroded contacts in the solenoid or something with the starter. Even a weak battery will cause the starter to drag.

Tl;dr: new starter

I use it now all the time. I have learned lots of time saving tricks, for welding, burning, destroying stuff, plus the guitar stuff.
