Quick googling learns they are 1-8 this year, and 8-23 over the last 3 years. He decided to just quit since they were getting their asses handed to them week in and week out

In that case it's both a dick AND pussy way to go out

...and we all know there are 3 types of people

Not sure what I think about that. Why couldn't he just wait until they were in the lock room and tell his team there instead of making some semi-dramatic situation about it..

The school contacted him afterwards and got him back on staff. He has been re-classified and is now their fundraising guru.

He will also teach some kind of sports management class.

Because some people lack integrity.

ESU's last winning season was 2015 at 6-5

The last playoff year for them was 2009 where they were bounced in the 1st Round of the NCAA D-II Tournament

ETA: they did make it to the national semifinal in 2005

Jesus that guy wanted attention.

Cut him some slack. He played football before facemasks. He's the Joe Paterno of Division II football (without the pedophilia).

I dunno. He's saying goodbye to a lifetime of memories and wanted to do it by walking off the playing field. Sort of like how Olympic wrestlers retire by putting their empty shoes in the ring before a scheduled match. I'll allow it.

264 wins in his career. His team and his school are cool with the way he went out (they rehired him as a VP for fund raising).

Coach James Franklin played QB for him for 4 years - he also helped Franklin get his start in coaching. Douds had countless opportunities to move on to much higher paying jobs. I doubt he had any idea his method of retiring would go viral.

Looking at his record he should've done everyone a favor and walked away years ago.

Perhaps he did not want all the tributes, and whatever else would have come with a formal retirement announcement and farewell tour. THAT would be an attention whore, especially if he would have demanded such.

Kind of like Stan Musial. Got a base hit, the Cardinals brought in a pinch runner, and off the field he ran. Done.
