According to the broadcast of the game, there had been some whispers around the program that Douds was set to retire at the end of the season, wrapping a 53-year run with the program, the final 45 of which he was the head coach. Still, there was confusion on the field as East Stroudsburg called timeout -- a timeout the team did not have available -- in the final seconds of the game, trailing Ohio Dominican 48-35.
"I nudged the official in front of me and I said, 'Sir, we are going to call a fourth timeout. I know that is illegal, you're going to penalize it, but that's OK. I am retiring.' I called timeout with 4 seconds to go, blew the whistle, the kids came in and I told them this is what we are doing,"

The penalty ended in a run-off, and the game was called. After congregating with his team, Douds went to shake the hand of the Ohio Dominican coach, tipped his hat to the crowd and then walked off the field by himself while the team was going through the handshake line. Douds said he kept his plan for the announcement a secret, only letting his wife in on the scheme prior to the game.
"I told my wife, 'When I leave the stadium, I am going to tip my hat and say, 'I love ya.'' I tipped my hat, walked to the car, and smiled all the way home," Douds said.

"I didnt want to distract the team with my retirement, but I'm going to get a penalty on purpose and walk off making a big show of my retirement."
I don't really care, but he's playing the look at me card while saying I didn't want it to be a look at me thing.

Not the way I would want to go out. Seems unfair to the team.

Saban needs to do something similar. Tap the new coach on the shoulder, and just move on. Otherwise all the uncertainity built up by espn will hurt bama. A similar transition out like stoops at ou.
They wont do it, but still.

A moment of temporary insanity.
A.K.A. an unexpected medical condition.
I like it.

the team was in the process of falling to 1-8 with their final 2 games on the road
basically got to give an on-field thank you to the fans (granted they didn't know WTF was happening) and lets the team start the process of hiring a new coach two weeks early
plus when you've been doing the job for 45 years and is the NCAA active wins leader and games coached leader... you can basically do whatever the hell you want

Quick googling learns they are 1-8 this year, and 8-23 over the last 3 years. He decided to just quit since they were getting their asses handed to them week in and week out

Only that one player even seemed to give a damn
Imagine what pre game pep talks must be like coming from a guy who has been coaching for more than 50 fricking years.
