cold weather tip:
my hands were numb from fishing in cold weather back when i was a wee lad. my older bro told me to put my hands inside my pants to get them warm cuz the pee pee area is the warmest place on your body. that changed my life.

-40 In North Dakota
I've seen single digits in Bismarck. God I hated North Dakota...miserable state.
I've also seen single digits in Marquette, MI and that was with some lake effect snow blowing in too. I got out of there about a day into that snow blowing in and when I called up a few days later they say they had snow piled up on the sides of the roads about 20ft tall.

It's -5 degrees here right now. Really not that bad out since there is not much wind. The wind is the key. Some of the coldest days of my life have been when it was in the high 20's low 30's with 30 mph winds. The wind is what sucks, not the cold.
Today would be a great day to be out ice fishing. Long sleeve shirt under a hoodie with bibs, a toque, and gloves. Sun on your face and the crisp, clean, cold winter air. Perfect.
How do you live up here? You get used to it and you embrace it. There is a lot of fun things to do outside in the winter time.

The coldest I've ever been was at survival school. We had to strip down to just pants and stand on top of a berm with the wind blowing 25 mph and a temp of +35F. After ~1 hr of exposure, I didn't have 1 piece of pink skin on my body and couldn't talk for shivering so badly.
Coldest place was a windchill of -20 in Niagara.

Climate records
When in high school in 1985 it was about 4 degrees at my house. Official Records indicate it was 6 degrees.

Last winter when it was cold and wet most of the time. Wife locked me out of the house because we had a huge argument over some budget issues and I told her to keep at what she was good for and make me a sandwich while I keep the budget.

NYE in L.A. one year. It was only like 40 but I only had slacks and a short sleeved shirt on, was drenched in so much sweat it looked like I had jumped in the pool and we stood outside for 2 hours looking for a cab. frick that!

I'm with you. I can't stand the wind, but can deal with a calm cold. I'm more miserable with 40 degrees, rain and wind than I am 15 degrees, calm and snow.

Not sure of the temp or wind chill. But I was in the very back of a chinook in mid February 2013 flying around the afghani mountains. Once we landed I think we were on a modest elevation of 7500 feet. Weather can change quick over there

I was in McPherson, KS in January 2007. It was 6 degrees the day we left, with the windchill around -10/-15. My family and I ended up having to extend our stay there because OKC had been iced over for 2 days, and we had to wait for the roads to clear to make it back to Houston. It was a cold I have never felt.
I also went skiing in Rangely, ME in January 2011. It stayed around 5-15 degrees our last 2 days there, but we had rather low humidity up the in mountains, so I was rolling around in jeans and a hoodie. I even walked out on a frozen Lake Rangley in jeans and a hoodie haha That was not as cold as that time in Kansas.

With windchill, it hit -38 in Chicago last winter.
Before that, it was when I was in third or fourth grade in 1999. It was -25 in Madison with a windchill hovering around -40.
That's about as cold as I got.
Currently in Chicago it's three degrees with a -18 windchill. It's damn cold, obviously, but not as bad as you would think (assuming you're bundled up).

My first winter in Boston. I was not used to that kind of cold with wind and snow. Only time I have ever had to actually wear thermal underwear under my clothes.
