So was watching something the other day that insinuated that the KGB were head of the pack. I always thought it was MI5.

What say the OT history oracles?

since McCarthy was right about communists all over the state and academia... between USA and USSR, I'll take the Soviets.

I just finished reading this:

From that book (which I highly recommend if you're interested in espionage and the Cold War) and what I've gathered from a few other books, the Soviets were superior at human intelligence while the US excelled at signals intelligence. I'm no expert though.

i think the russians were way more successful at keeping secrets, right up to the fall of the berlin wall we thought they were much stronger then they were.

as for who had the best spies, i think that an individual person type of thing, it all comes down to having the better intelligence to start with

Yup, the commies have firm control of our education system and much of a certain party, and footsoldiers to boot.

I’d say they accomplished their agenda

I am friends with the first deep cover couple (American) that were in the USSR and while most of the stuff they did no one will ever know they do talk about how much information they provided to the allies because they lacked trade craft to penetrate the USSR as well.

The husband of the couple ended up Director of Operations CIA and now is retired in a college town in Texas.

Read the book "Spymaster" by Kalugin. He was the Soviets youngest man to ever become a general in the KGB. When you read it, he pretty much comes out and says the CIA definitely had an upper hand. He mentions something that westerners always thought the KGB was organized which wasn't no were near reality.

Really a great read for those wanting to see Cold War spying from the Russian side.

The country with the best spies is probably the country you wouldn't pick, because we still don't know what they did.

I think the US knew what their capabilities were but the fear-mongering let us pump money into places where people were able to get rich.

The Soviets infiltrated the Manhattan Project greatly speeding up Soviet atomic capability which was a cornerstone of the Cold War.

The Mossad.

They're the ones who got the notes on Khrushchev's turn on the Stalinist legacy out. They engineered a world wide Nazi hunt; they prevented a few wars, completed hundreds of assassinations-- including a near complete murder of the entire Egyptian General Staff on the eve of war, and developed a nuclear weapons program.

A lot of you are saying the Soviets, and I admit I dont know too much about the subject, but America's political/economic system didnt crumble to the point we had to disband.

The Soviets were obviously pretty damn good at espionage, but we were no slouches either.

It’s not necessarily a fair comparison since free, open-market democracies will be easier to spy on than a closed off communist overly-militaristic shite hole.

A lot of that was just bad analysis on our end.

It’s natural to assume worst case scenarios. And we continually overestimated the effectiveness of their weapon systems, not to mention the numbers they were producing.
