When I became disabled in 2010 after a blood clot messed up my leg, I went on Cobra. In 2011 Cobra cost me about $350 a month and I had the same coverage as my old insurance. Pretty sure you get the same coverage at the rate your company pays, but it's only available for so long. I think you only get to stay on Cobra for a year or 18 months. It took two years to be able to get disability. For six months after Cobra , but before getting on disability you have to get some HIPA State sponsored insurance. It was over $800 per month and didn't cover near as much as Cobra, or the old work insurance did. I was still going in weekly for wound care and rehab, but that insurance didn't cover some things. That six months was worse than the hospital stay.

I wouldn't quit a job over my boss not wanting me to take off. I'd plan everything out with my doctor and BCBS and then tell him about it. Let him fire you.

After an Oct 4th-Dec. 6th hospital stay and 11 different surgical procedures, I think my insurance had paid over $400K, but I owned a little over $7000.00 in medical bills. I had to pay each of them $50/month until I got approved for disability.

Hope this helps. Like I said that info was from January of 2011.

Just wanted to add that if you need COBRA, you can use HSA funds to directly pay for premiums. This in notable since HSA funds cannot be used for regular health insurance premiums.

Let the benefits work for you. Your job offered them without stipulations so use them. Your boss can get mad in the same underwear he gets glad in.

COBRA is basically you paying the full amount of the insurance policy that your company wa providing. normally the employeer pays part anf you pay the rest. you quit/are let go you can continue on the policy for up to 18 months, but you pay the full amount of the policy

Don't use COBRA that is insane. Hang in there until december. Quit in December and your work insurance will be good until the end of the month. Because unemployed you will be able to sign up on Obama care in december that will start in January. They ask what your income is and since you are unemployed you can project a low income level just make sure it is above 12,000 dollars so you can get Obama care. If it is below they will put you on medicare. With that low income you will get a crazy low premium and deductable.

The FMLA is out of the picture due to 16 employees at my location (must have at least 20 employees for FMLA to be valid).

Does your employer have other locations? If so then you can aggregate those to get to the 50 (not 20) employee threshold to trigger FMLA (assuming you work at least 1250 hours per year).

This is the question: If I 'quit' my job, will I still be able to use COBRA to get this hip replacement done?

I dont thiink you get COBRA benefits if you quit.

FWIW, I got laid off back in 2016 and was offered COBRA coverage that I could pay for that was conveniently the same cost as Obamacare coverge if I bought it myself with no discounts... I had been with that company 29 yrs so seniority did not make any difference

UPDATE: My boss and I had the discussion about me taking off several weeks for hip replacement and my subsequent recovery.

He kinda hemmed and hawed but we agreed to get it done WITHOUT me losing my job... yet.

I am scheduled to get the procedure performed the middle of September.

I was going to get this done regardless of the outcome. I am planning to retire next year anyway so it was not going to be that a big of a loss.

Anywho, getting a little nervous about not so much the actual procedure but the recovery phase.

Any tips on post-op recovery would be appreciated.

Thanks and God Bless.

Don't stress about the recovery.

Take all your medication as prescribed even if you feel like you don't need it.

You'll walk on it the same day. If you're moving well, you'll go home the same day. If not moving well, you'll have extra days for rehab.

When you get home keep moving. Don't post up in bed or on the couch. No leg crossing. Most important thing is not to fall. The more you move, the quicker you'll recover.

The worst part will be getting your bowel movements back to normal after taking the drugs.

This was the easiest surgery I've ever had. Good luck!

Firing you for taking time off for a very medically necessary surgery would’ve been a pretty shitty reason to fire someone to begin with. And by the time he went through interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training a replacement, you’d have probably been back at work anyway.

If your job is capable of working remote at all, I’d probably talk to the boss to see if he’d be open to that idea once you’re recovering back home and off pain meds. At least then you wouldn’t have to take as much of the leave unpaid and boss will think you’re trying to be a team player

Mother had this done recently. It's amazing how quickly they got her to stand up and move around post-surgery, like 30 minutes.

This has drastically improved recovery time apparently. Just stick to the PT plan. My mom said the pool therapy helped her the most and finding a comfortable way to sleep while still preventing clots is key. More you move around (safely), the quicker you'll be back to yourself. My older mother was playing tennis again sooner than anyone thought she would and feels great now.

Science is awesome.

Hey man, your company is shitty.

There should be absolutely ZERO hemming and hawing from anyone who is any sort of reasonable about a medical procedure.

I’d do what someone else suggested if they really were being difficult if this doesn’t workout. Get your ducks in a row, Hang in until December, quit 12/1 and then do any medically necessary things as your insurance will still be effective until end of year.
